🔔 NEW WORK 🔔

Ben Hanley’s latest short film “The Exception” is now available on YouTube.

It’s a powerful story that picked up the audience award for the June edition of Filmed Up at HOME Mcr.

My second time working with Ben and it’s always a joy to sound design and mix his films!

At last! Editing some ambience recordings I made a while back - using the powerhouse that is RX.

I love recording (it guarantees the sounds will have your own unique stamp) but actually taking the time to clean them up, master them and add metadata is another story.

Still, it’s really satisfying to tick this off ✅

Class selection of shorts at the June 2025 edition of Filmed Up at HOME last night.

Congrats and the cast and crew on winning the audience award for The Exception 👏👏👏

Especially Ben who wore multiple hats in this project including writer, director, lead actor, producer, editor (and other hats I’m probably not even aware of). Delighted for you Ben!

I played a small part in this film as sound designer, we also did a 5.1 mix in the Avid S6 suite at Spirit Studios. Composer Darren Sng’s score sounded incredible in Cinema 1 at 🎶

It was also lovely to meet / catch up with some film folks in the bar afterwards!

💥 New showreel 💥

A selection of some recent work in narrative / scripted film and TV. For some reason, my last couple of reels dropped in May and this year is no different.

My brief to myself was to make something in the style of a trailer and keep it under two minutes. I’ll let you be the judge of whether I succeeded or not 😄

Massive thanks to all the very talented directors, producers and filmmakers who trusted me enough to help their work sound better!

If you are looking for sound editing, design or mixing work done, please get in touch - I’m always looking to get involved with interesting projects.

Editing dialogue for a short film today, a powerful story about what is quite a live issue at the moment.

Also using a new (for me at least) tool - Marc Specter’s software, only scratching the surface but loving it so far!

The second half really ramps up with lots of overlapping dialogue and a prominent score, so it’ll be an interesting challenge to weave the various elements together in the mix.

A lil’ appreciation for one of my favourite game soundtracks of all time, Streets of Rage II on the Sega Mega Drive.

It was released in 1992 and at the time I never thought I’d be listening to it more than three decades later. The music has been imprinted on my memory from many (many!) hours of play.

The main composer was Yuzo Koshiro, who developed his own music programming language which pushed the Mega Drive soundchip to its limits.

He was heavily influenced by the electronic dance music of the time, especially house and techno. He filtered this through his own sense of harmony and timing to create something pretty mindblowing.

Dreamer, first heard in Level 3, is a great example, with funky percussion, jazzy harmonies and a staccato piano creating an irresistible sense of forward momentum.

It was the first video game where the composer kept the copyright to the music, and he was even credited on the title screen before the game began.

Streets of Rage 2, known in Japan as Bare Knuckle II: Sh*tō he no Chinkonka (ベア・ナックルII 死闘への鎮魂歌 lit. "Bare Knuckle II: The Requiem of the Deadly Battle"?), an...

There has been a huge amount of discussion (and rightly so) about the themes of Adolescence, but relatively little ink has been spilled about the sound.

This article from A Sound Effect helps to remedy the situation by interviewing sound supervisor James Drake and re-recording mixer Jules Woods. They had previously worked on Boiling Point, which proved to be an excellent training ground for the even more ambitious Adolescence.

They speak about the value of collaboration with the location sound team, crafting a realistic sound world through authentic field recordings, and the use of near-silence at times to help support the actors' incredible performances.

So many insights here!

Award-winning re-recording mixers Jules Woods and James Drake on working with the production sound team on set, capturing ambience, effects, and crowds from the filming locations, mixing 'true to life' perspectives with ever-changing panning and processing, and much more!
