This is LA.. It gives us our identity as a KROBO.and also as a member of a particular family. There are 3 ways we use this LA in a KROBO tradition. It is use purposely to give a new name, that is a new identity.

First it is use to name a new born child.
Secondly it is use to renamed a child or even an adult
Third it is use to name a traditional ruler.

When a child is born until he or she is given a name he or she can only be called a child (Jukuɛ) or call with the day name like Kofi or Afi because he is not yet recognised by the family to take a family name. On the day of the naming ceremony the family name or the name will be mentioned and the LA string will be tied around his wrist to seal the name or the family name that was given to the child.

In the second instant when a child is born out of ordinary relationship the man or the man family do not have the right to name the child. It is the woman's family that will name the child. The child will get a family name from the mother's family. Later for the child to be fully recognised or the father to claim ownership of the child he has to perform a custom to cut the old LA (La pomi comes in here). After the LA POMI (the cutting of the mother's family LA) the father have to rename the child by tying a new LA string which seal or signify the father's family name that will be given by the father's family.

Third, during installation of a chief the LA string is tie around his wrist to give him a new identity. He therefore takes on the new name or the stool name as his new identity. Customarily he can not be called by his old name but the stool name given to him.

Lɔɔ he wa ma de ke LA ji wa biɛ nɔ ma mi ni. Notwithstanding this there are some families that do not use LA to name their children. Yes that is their family tradition and not Krobo tradition.

Klolii ji wɔ. Our customs and traditions give us our identity.

Next time we will learn about the components (the beads) use in making the LA. WHAT DO THEY MEAN.
