Couldn’t reach the waterfalls I was searching for due to logging 😢 But did come across this red alder stump! We have 4 out of 8 alder types here in the PNW.

Now ya’ll know why it’s named red alder! Red because of its high tannin content. Native Americans used it to die fish nets so they’d be less visable in the water and medicinally as well.

With a name like Whistle Punk you bet I needed to hike it! In winter the forest is stripped down to its basic elements: texture, patterns, color…

In early 20th century logging a whistle punk (often a youth, hence the term punk) used a coded system of steam whistle blasted to communicate and manage the often dangerous movement of logs prior to radio communication.

Yesterday I woke to a coastal rain/wind storm with power outages and this morning I woke in the Cascades to a beautiful snow fall ❄️
