Bangalore: A dramatic scene unfolded in Karnataka as a police officer was caught red-handed during a surprise raid by the Lokayukta police. The official, allegedly caught accepting a bribe, was seen breaking down and pleading for mercy as the anti-corruption unit closed in. The video of the officer's desperate reaction has gone viral across social media, sparking a massive conversation about accountability and the fight against corruption in the state.
Details:
Inspector Govindaraju from K.P. Agrahara station was nabbed Wednesday while allegedly accepting ₹4 lakh to drop complainant Mohammed Akbar's name from a December 2025 chit fund cheating probe against Akbar and others. Sources said that Akbar had paid ₹1 lakh advance on January 24 before tipping off Lokayukta, who trapped Govindaraju at Chamarajpet's City Armed Reserve grounds using phenolphthalein-tainted notes. He now faces Prevention of Corruption Act charges, with probes checking for earlier bribes or accomplices in the case. Videos of the arrest fueled online anger over police graft and praise for Lokayukta's swift action.

AICC Chairman Dr Mallikarjun Kharge Slams Attempted Attack on CJI Gavai, Calls It a ‘Blow to Democracy’; Seeks Stern Action from Centre

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday strongly condemned the attempted attack on Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, calling it a “shameful insult” to the nation’s highest judicial authority and a serious blow to democratic principles.

Speaking to reporters, Kharge said he was deeply disturbed that such an incident had not sparked widespread outrage across the country. “It is disgraceful that someone claiming to be a lawyer tried to throw papers at the CJI while invoking religion. I condemn this act in the strongest terms, both personally and on behalf of the Congress Party,” he stated.

Urging the Central government to take strict action against the culprit, Kharge said that targeting the Chief Justice in the name of religion or ideology amounted to an attack on the very foundation of the Constitution. He also expressed disappointment over the subdued response from legal institutions, governments, political parties, and the public.

In addition, the AICC chief denounced the killing of a man from the Valmiki community in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli district, describing it as a “complete breakdown of law and order” under the State government.

Udupi zile me dilon ko chuune wala waqiya aya manzare aam par, Hindu buzurg aurat ki aakhri rasoomat kar, muslim khaandan ne diya ekta aur Insaniyat ka paigham
In a remarkable display of communal harmony, a Muslim family assisted in the cremation of a Hindu woman who had been living with them for 75 years. The incident took place in Mallaru near Kaup.
Janaki Poojary, a Hindu woman who had lived as a member of Muslim man Rafeeq's household, passed away on January 21 due to health issues. Her cremation was performed on Wednesday according to Hindu customs with the support of Rafeeq's family and assistance from the local Hindu community.
Janaki, originally from Udyavara and in her 90s, had lived with Rafeeq's family since the demise of her husband, who had been a close friend of Rafeeq's father. After her husband’s death, Janaki moved to Mumbai and became part of Rafeeq’s family, assisting them with household work and living as one of their own. Though Janaki had family members of her own, none maintained contact with her. Her only son, after marriage, lived separately.

In 1980, Rafeeq’s family moved from Mumbai to Kukkatte in Udupi, and Janaki continued to live with them. Even after the family relocated to Mallaru Garadi Ward a decade ago, she stayed with them until her final days. Rafeeq’s family cared for Janaki during her old age, reciprocating the love and care she had shown them during their childhood.

After Janaki’s passing, her son and granddaughter arrived to pay their last respects. Honoring the wishes of Rafeeq and his brother Abdul Khader, the cremation was conducted at the Kaup crematorium under the leadership of Ramesh Poojary Mallaru and Surie Shetty Kaup. Her son, Shekhar Vithal, lit the funeral pyre.

The ceremony was attended by Kaup municipal councilor Harinakshi Devadiga, member Shailesh Amin, Rafeeq, Abdul Khader, Ravi Achari, Narayan, Sukumar, Sandesh, Padooru Babu Kundar, Shakeel, Qasim Sahib, Noor, and others.

Following Hindu traditions, the post-funeral rituals, including the Tilaahoma ceremony, were performed by her son by the seaside. Rafeeq’s family expressed their desire to host a meal near their home as part of the ceremonies, stressing the bond they shared with Janaki.
