Yes, she is not a good person, but if you purposefully misgender Lily Tino, you are also harming the trans community because you’re enforcing the idea that if you don’t like someone, you have the right to be transphobic towards them.

The so-called “allies” who accuse bad actors like Lily Tino, Elphaba, and Chris Chan of not being “real” trans women, and purposefully misgender them, are using the exact same rhetoric that TERFs and right-wingers use to invalidate trans people. You’re giving people a free pass to be openly transphobic if someone’s actions are perceived to be bad.

And it’s especially harmful dueling to the way it specifically targets non-passing “masculine”-looking trans women. This is especially insidious because of the double-standard applied to well-passing, “attractive” trans people who have also done great harm to the community. You wouldn’t call Caitlyn Jenner or Blair White “men”. You wouldn’t call Buck Angel or Kalvin Garrah “women”.

Being an ally does not make you free from transphobia.

Being q***r does not make you free from transphobia.

Being trans does not make you free from transphobia.
