Annie Londonderry, originally Annie Cohen, road a bicycle around the world, because two rich dudes said a woman probably couldn’t do it. When she did, the winner would get $10K and so would she! With 1894 being what it was toward Jews and women, Annie set out with a change of clothes, a pistol and a last name change to Londonderry from Cohen to hide her Jewish identity and to get some of that sweet sweet sponsorship money from the Londonderry Lithia Spring Water Company of New Hampshire.

I heard about this story through Aaron Mahnke's Cabinet of Curiosities, episode The Little Giant.
