The forest falls and it recovers. Trees left half-standing, leaning, or twisted, trunks scarred by disease or damage. What should be upright and whole appears bent, broken, marked or fallen.

Now featured in Deformed Surfaces: Uncovering Somerset Landscapes at Millfield School, Atkinson Gallery (10 Sept – 10 Oct 2025), The Silent Land is given a dedicated section within a wider survey of Alexander’s two decades of work exploring Somerset landscapes.

In the later pages of The Silent Land, light begins to filter through Stockhill Wood. Sun cuts across branches, illuminates ferns, and softens the gloom of the earlier sequences.

These photographs show subtle shifts, shafts of brightness in the undergrowth, or the clearing skies. A turning point that even in landscapes marked by loss, light returns.

The Silent Land closes on signs of regrowth: delicate greenery, saplings, undergrowth pushing through old wounds in the forest floor.

These images carry a different mood from the first half. They speak of resilience and possibility — of nature’s capacity to heal itself, and of the quiet persistence of life in places scarred by industry and loss.

There’s something wonderfully reassuring about a printer printing their own book — can’t wait to see it.

In 2004, Martin Parr turned his attention to an unlikely subject: wristwatches bearing the face of Saddam Hussein.

Cheap, mass-produced and sold as souvenirs, they reveal how politics, propaganda and kitsch can slip into the everyday. Martin has quite the collection!

The publication was printed on newsprint and sealed inside a gold envelope. Fragile materials and throwaway packaging were deliberate choices, treating as both as a commodity and a curiosity.

First launched alongside Parr’s exhibition at Les Rencontres d’Arles, the book drew attention for its humour and cultural commentary. Today, with its fragile format and limited run, it survives as a rare collector’s piece within Parr’s wider publishing practice.

From 2002–07, Martin Parr photographed the last available parking space in car parks across 41 countries. A subject at once ordinary and universal becomes, through repetition, a typology of global desire and frustration.

The book is designed as a wedding album. White suede covers, gold-foil edges, an invitation card and signed limitation sheet, all presented in its own lined box. The materials exaggerate the “preciousness” of the empty space, framing absence as something worthy of commemoration.

Exhibited at Rocket Gallery, London, Parking Spaces was received as both playful and incisive. Its mix of wit and ceremony caught the attention of critics and collectors alike. With only 1,000 copies produced, each signed and boxed, it now circulates as a rare collector’s piece.
