Since the recent crash of the recorded music industry there has been less & less high quality recordings being published internationally, leaving much of th

Catching up with Muhammad Ayyub & Haji Iqbal Naqibi in Birmingham.

Ayyub sahib was the creator of the Oriental Star Agency who recorded many of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s greatest recordings.

Haji Iqbal was Ustad ji’s secretary throughout his career, as one can see in all the old videos.

Honoured to talk story with these pioneers of the international qawwali scene! Also gave them copies of our newest limited printing of the 25th anniversary greatest hits vinyl 🎙️

To mark 25 years together as Fanna-Fi-Allah, we’ve released a special three-volume box set: The Surrey Studio Sessions.
Recorded in the peaceful English countryside, these albums reflect the deep roots of traditional Qawwali — raw, devotional, and undiluted by overproduction or fusion elements.
In the spirit of our great Ustads, we sought to honour the purity of the tradition as it has been passed down to us.
The recordings feature beloved classic Qawwalis and a stirring addition of clarinet and bansuri by Kansia Pritchard, woven naturally into the soundscape.
A heartfelt tribute to the path we’ve walked, and to the tradition that continues to guide us. Now available on all streaming platforms!

Presenting Orooj (عرؤج), the fourth release from Ilahi Sufi Qawwali, the world’s first female qawwali ensemble. Orooj—meaning “soaring”—captures their passionate improvisations as they rise to meet the Beloved, embodying the essence of devotion through qawwali.

This inspired album features live renditions of Chaap Tilak and Mera Piya Ghar Aaya, recorded at the Samā School of Music in Bali. Blending the mystical roots of qawwali with classical raags such as Rageshri and Charukeshi, Ilahi brings a fresh perspective to this sacred tradition.

Founded in 2019 by Tahir Qawwal and Alexandra Amïe, Ilahi continues to expand the reach of Sufi music with reverence and innovation. Through Orooj, their voices soar, inviting listeners into the transcendent beauty of qawwali.

Now streaming on all major platforms.

Ilahi Sufi Qawwali perform Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's soul-stirring kalam 'Tumhein Dillagi.'

Joined by the talented Sunaz Hesari's whirling, this female Sufi ensemble is a testament to the beauty of true devotion and the pursuit of divine connection.
These dedicated women have been honing their Qawwali skills under the guidance of Tahir Qawwal at the esteemed Sama School of Music in Bali since 2020.

Translation:
“I have seen you in innocent springs and I’ve seen you in luminous stars.
My beloved, I swear on your veiled beauty
I have seen you through a stream of tears.

This is true love, not an infatuation.
Just walk on the roads of divine love and see.”

Tumhein Dil Lagi by Ilahi Sufi Qawwali, live in Bali.

“Forget the infatuation, just walk on the roads of love and see.

I live only for you and would give my life for you.
I speak from my heart and listen.

This is true love, not infatuation.
Just walk on the roads of love and see.

Wound upon wound… inflicted, sip after sip… of your own blood.
Let out not a sigh, seal you lips!
This is love, not infatuation.

Love is no child’s play. Think of it not as water, but as fire!
It’s makes you shed tears of blood, don’t think of it as child’s play.

This love is not easy, think of it as a river of fire!
And you must drown to cross.

This is true love, not infatuation.
Just walk on the roads of love and see.”

Alap in Raag Ahir Bhairav

Reverent, hopeful and mystical, this well-loved dawn raag has a tantalising balance of shuddh (natural) and komal (flat) notes; evoking a beautiful spectrum of emotion.

Singing while ill made me think of the legendary vocalist Pandit Kumar Gandharva who sung with the use of only one lung after 12 years of tuberculosis back in the 1940s.

Ustad Lal Chand Yamla Jatt’s daughter 💕

It’s a great honour to support the exceptional musical artists of India & Pakistan through the Music of the Mystics project.

Every day we listen to the music, yet rarely are the artists rewarded for their work.

Deep gratitude to all who have purchased the Music of the Mystics film series!
To Ghauri ji for excellent remix of this song featured in volume 9 of the soundtrack.
To Shankar Faiz for the gift delivery in Ludhiana.
And to Sarbjeet ji for carrying on this epic lineage 🎶

“Since the first moment I heard Qawwali 25yrs ago I’ve been completely obsessed and in love and with it.
The reasons are many…

Yet one unique element of this tradition which moves me is how an ensemble of about 10 men sing together as one.
A truly powerful expression of unity, community & cooperation; wherein the collective devotion of many is amplify as one.

Over the past 25yrs of fervent study with the greatest Qawwali singers of Pakistan, my love for this art continues to grow.
Though in all these years of fervent research and learning, I have never once seen women offering this music as an ensemble.
There are certainly some remarkable female Sufi singers from Zahida Parveen to Abida Parveen, yet why not a complete group in doaba Qawwali formation?

So i’ve imagined how it would be to hear the beautiful poetry of the Sufis expressed through the feminine voice in full formation, knowing all too well that initially there would be many who oppose it. Not because there is any valid reason that women singing sacred music is haram or looked down upon, but because it’s outside of the way the tradition has developed for nearly a millennium.

Now, 1.5yrs into the experiment of creating the Ilahi Qawwali ensemble with my partner Alexandra Stern, it’s truly awe inspiring to hear women sing in this way. And not just any women singing like this, but an exceptionally diverse group at that.

Though practicing long hours each week, we’re still in the early phases of learning together, so for now please excuse the mistakes as we continue to grow as a community and find our unique way to carry Qawwali forward into a modern era of cultural diversity and gender equality.

This beautiful kalam in praise of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar was composed by my dear teacher Ustad Muazzam Ali Khan."

This is just the beginning of a deeply revered Sufi epic written in the mid 1800s by the Punjabi mystic Mian Muhammad Bakhsh.
In this story a prince falls in love with a fairy within a dream and is taken through a profound journey of spiritual awakening.
It is similar to the Bhagavad Gita and Heer Ranjha, in that many of the essential trials of a soul's pilgrimage back to divine connection are deeply explored.
