Day 20: Be More Encouraging

Stories captivate us. We become involved with the characters and empathize with their experiences. Depending on where the story takes you, you can be inspired or left discouraged. Our favorite stories are about ordinary people; people like you and me, who've overcome.
If you're looking for a great story, you don't have to look too far. Forgo the classics and box office hits and instead look within. You have a story and it's unique, and inspirational and yours! It's meant to be shared. Whatever your story, it will inspire someone. Your struggles? You didn't go through it for nothing. Your victories? They weren't given to bless you alone, but that it would be used to bless others.
How can your story help those around you? It can brings glory to God to show what He is capable of. Our trials and victories become the driving force behind our personal ministry to others and encourage many who may be having similar experiences. Your story says, "I understand, you are not alone." Share it today.

Scripture: Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16

Day 19: Be More Obedient

I want one thing from my children; their obedience. I want to give my kids direction, and see them follow through. Why? Not because I'm looking to be bossy but because I want my children to trust me and know that I have their best interest in mind. Yes, I know my requests aren't always fun, they don't always come easy, and at times what I ask isn't even seen as fair. So my demands come up against complaints, attitudes, and sometimes the silent treatment. If they only realized that with 5 kids, I welcome silence. ;)
When I look at my relationship with God, I can see myself acting the same way with Him at times. I can point fingers to others when He's disciplining me, I can put things off when I don't like what's being asked of me, and I can ignore Him when I'm upset. How about you? How obedient are you to the Lord's teaching? Do you question it? Do you ignore it?
If you haven't been obedient to the Lord, you can begin today. When my kids recognize they've overstepped their boundaries they will come and make it right. Well, the Lord may be asking you for obedience in ways that aren't fun, easy, or "fair," but when you accept that His ways are greater, then obedience is a matter of following through, just because, He said so.

“But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted,” Romans 6:17

Day 18: Be More Faithful

Everyone has faith but not everyone puts their faith in God. Some put their faith in their power, money, or even in other people. The problem with misguided faith is that it will eventually fail those who put their trust in it.
God, on the other hand, never fails us when we put our trust in Him. He is constant and unfailing. In Matthew 17:20 Jesus reminds us how powerful faith is, "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Even a little faith goes a long way when it's pointing to the right source. If you struggle having faith, you aren't alone. We all have times where we forget to look back and see how God has worked things out in the past. What comfort did he bring you? How did he get you through it? Let those reminders help you be faithful in the minor details, be stepping stones to greater faith, and be an example to others of God's ways over our own. The way we show faithful can encourage someone else's faith, so let's be examples of faithfulness by shining our light on a dim world. With God nothing is impossible.

Day 17: Be More Patient

"You must be so patient," that's what people usually tell me when they find out I home school my 5 kids. I let out a little chuckle, and let them in on the truth, "I'm not." If you don't believe me, just trust me, I'm Cuban, which is synonymous for passionate and loud. The only reason my children and I have made it this far is because God is gracious. I fall short all the time and if there's anything I need to work on, it's patience people!
Throughout the years, I've experienced frustration and I've questioned myself, but calling it quits has never been an option. Patience during these moments, although difficult, has taught me to give things time and leave it in God's hands. Scripture reminds us that difficult moments stretch us, and produce character. In James 1: 2-4 it is written, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
Looking back on my 12 years of home schooling, I see how far we've come, the hurdles we've made it through, and how much we've grown. Yet it's nothing one day, or one experience could have solved, but years of faith-filled moments and learning curves that continue to shape out, every day.
Difficult times mold us and teach us how to endure. We earn emotional strength to deal with the tough times and gain appreciation for moments that would otherwise escape us. Patience strengthens our faith to believe that the outcome is yet to come.

Day 16: Be More Courageous

What are you fearful of? What giants hold you back from doing what you feel God is calling you to do? Fears keep us in bo***ge, they taunt us, and make us doubt what God can do through us. People who accomplish great things are not fearless but courageous enough to face their fears. In Joshua 1:9 God tells the Israelites, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Just a few weeks ago, my younger son was confronted with one of his fears. He was set to lead out on a song for worship and although he plays all the time in front of a crowd, he was afraid to lead out singing. My husband spoke to him and had him confront his fear. The first week, he could barely be heard, but he did it. Now three weeks later, he has not only confronted it but conquered it! Does it mean he doesn't get nervous? Of course he does, but it doesn't hold him back and he's more confident doing so.
Today God is calling you to face your fear of change, people, or rejection. Whatever it is, God doesn't want us walking around discouraged when he has given us a spirit of boldness and walks before us. If God is for us, who can be against us? Whatever you face, God is there. He has a plan for His people and it takes courage to live it out.

Day 15: Be More Giving:

I love the wonderful feeling that surrounds the Christmas season. It's filled with celebration, joy, and giving. Then January makes its entrance and we pack those sentiments away with the decorations. Shouldn't the season of giving be all year long? Not giving to receive, out of obligation, or to look good before others, but to meet a need and bless someone else? In today's competitive, fast paced world, many people are possession filled and emotionally starved...needing a gift beyond a gift card.
The gift of giving comes in more than just a wrapped box. Paul describes that generosity in 2 Corinthians 8:2-4. "In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people."
Wow, how do we live out that fervor to give and teach it to our future generations? The answer is in the gift of caring for one another. Fulfilling each other's needs. God steps in when we give beyond our capacity with our time, talents, and treasures. Trust Him to provide. For whatever reason that He chooses to do so, our giving results in receiving the blessing of joy. Joy that quenches the need to find fulfillment anywhere else, when we freely give of what He has freely provided for us.
God calls us to be cheerful givers not over-gifted gluttons. Will you choose a lifetime of giving over just seasons of overspending.

Day 14: Be More Positive

Being positive is a matter of perspective. There have been times when I've been caught in the cycle of negativity, and focusing on the downside of a situation, has only lead to depression.
Changing our focus changes our direction. There is a correlation between being positive and having God's peace. Philippians 4:8-9 says, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." We have a choice. We can choose those things which breed negativity: lies, jealousy, selfishness, or hate or we can choose those things that come from God and have a positive impact: love, joy, truth, purity. Who or what we surround ourselves with can affect how we view things. It may be time to let go of what's dragging us down or start making the most of every situation. Be a positive influence in your circle of influence and start looking at the glass as half full.

Day 13: Be More Hopeful

We all have questions we ponder as we finagle our way through life. Purpose and fulfillment is what we long for. And in whatever way we want to accomplish that goal, we think about it, plan for it, and work towards the vision we have. Along the journey, there are days where we second guess what we're doing, but we can fight those thoughts and push forward with an internal drive fueled by hope.
Isn't hope what gets us through when we can't grasp in reality what we see mentally? Hope pushes us forward and keeps us in the fight. Thankfully, we have good reason to have hope beyond the physical world we live in. We have hope that tomorrow can be different because His mercies are new every morning. Hope that we may be hard-pressed but not destroyed. Hope that we don't have to be afraid because of whom we trust... Jesus.
Our hope in things unseen helps gives hope to others who lack the vision. We become the guides who lead others to see the light and anticipate what seems beyond reach. Today, are you that person giving hope to someone or do you need to receive it?

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” Lamentations 3:22-24

Day 12: Be More Loving

I think it's pretty safe to say that most people love a good love story, whether they'll admit it or not. We love to see someone risk it all, look foolish, and become vulnerable, all for love's sake. What's missing from those great love stories is usually what happens after the, "They lived happily ever after," part. You know, the part where life gets real, the flaws are visible and the passion subsides.
Isn't that where the real love story begins? When love becomes sacrificial and forgiving and can be counted on even when one doesn't deserve it? Maybe we love a good love story because God has engraved His love story in our hearts. He risked it all, His Only Son Jesus, who came and looked foolish before others as He spoke of heavenly things they didn't understand. He claimed to be God in the flesh and was mocked because of it. He became vulnerable on the cross because He thought we were worth dying for.
After knowing the greatest story ever told, how could we be more loving to those around us? The ones we get short tempered and rude with or the ones who are short tempered and rude with us. Why not inject love into our actions and words whether it be with our family members, friends, or just people we run into as we go about our day? Love has the power to save. It protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres. It never fails. Love is pretty powerful and today you can give it as a free gift.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3
