Nightlife is more than parties, it’s people, art, and belonging.
Salt Lake City officials are considering an ordinance that would criminalize alcohol consumption between 2am-6am in any non-residential space, even at private, members-only events.
This threatens not just afters, but an entire cultural ecosystem in our city. Clubs, venues, afters, and art spaces give artists, musicians, and communities a place to grow. Many of our own label artists are actively part of these communities, creating music, art, and experiences that wouldn’t exist without these spaces.
For these creators, this ordinance isn’t just inconvenient, it’s anti-art and anti-culture. It limits opportunities for musicians to perform, artists to show their work, and communities to gather safely. When one piece of the ecosystem is attacked, the whole city suffers.
For many, the dancefloor is the only safe space. The only place to truly express ourselves. Taking that away doesn’t just shut down events, it erases culture, stifles creativity, and pushes community away.
We urge the City Council to reject this ordinance and instead work with the community to support a thriving, safe, and inclusive nightlife. Where artists and musicians can continue creating, performing, and connecting.
Salt Lake deserves a nightlife that welcomes all of us and a city that supports its artists.
