Introducing EASTSIDE SAMPLES – a new compilation from East Taiwan collective – blending hip hop beats with local indigenous sounds.

In collaboration with Studio Monkey Shoulder, Flavor Hualien organised a series of workshops that brought producers from across the country together to spend time with the local Truku and Pangcah/Amis indigenous communities.

The workshops were designed to immerse the producers in indigenous culture and foster exchange, experimentation and collaboration – resulting in EASTSIDE SAMPLES, a compilation inspired by their experiences.

Each track features recorded samples of traditional instruments – including xylophone, flute, and mouth harp – as well as traditional chants & rhythms, then reimagined with beats crafted on 404 samplers.

The goal of EASTSIDE SAMPLES is to preserve Taiwan’s roots & Indigenous music culture while inspiring new sonic possibilities that resonates both locally and globally.

Producers featured include: .dao from collective in Taipei & local Hualien producers .con.tw

We travelled into the mountains of Hualien in far east Taiwan with Studio Monkey Shoulder to join and producers from across the country to immerse ourselves in the local culture of the Indigenous Truku people.

In a programme curated by founder , we explored the traditions of their music heritage, sampled local sounds and jammed with 404 beat samplers to create EASTSIDE SAMPLES – an upcoming compilation of tracks made by the producers that blends indigenous sounds with contemporary hip hop beats.

Take a look to see how Shane’s mission to educate and connect people with Taiwan’s roots, creating space for meaningful exchange – inspiring a new wave of Taiwanese sounds, preserving the culture and reconnecting future generations with their heritage.

“I love how this meeting of Taiwanese indigenous tradition and contemporary hip hop production come together in such a unique and authentic way. Can’t wait to hear this album and how the sounds of Hualien have been reimagined”” Gilles Peterson

The final selection for Album of the Month - Black History Month.
‘Black Love’ by Ella Barrett & Friends - featuring four people essential in my musical education.
We explore how, as Black people, we use creativity, agency, and community as a collective force.

D’Angelo, Black Messiah (2014) - Selected by Alicia Barrett ()
This album amazes me. But its core is protest. It speaks to the political climate of 2013 and 2014, and insists: “It’s not about me, but about all of us.” Its power is in celebrating Blackness — beauty, community, love, and resistance. Releasing this after 14 years is an act of protest. A true work of art. RIP to one of the greatest.

Janet Jackson, ‘Velvet Rope’ (1997) - Selected by Callum Mcmillan Rice ()
With ‘The Velvet Rope’, Janet pushes the envelope, challenging how Black women present their journey with sexuality and self-discovery. It feels ahead of its time, from sampling the Exorcist theme to “Empty”, an early depiction of online relationships.

The Harder They Come, Various artists. (1972) - Selected by
Headed by Jimmy Cliff, this is the ultimate no-skip album; its joy is contagious. The energy reminds me of my grandad’s house, and the summer I watched the film back to back. Listening feels like an exhale—an album of hope. Its sound, style, and spirit remain.

Bob Marley and the Wailers, ‘Natty Dread’, (1971) - Selected by Rob Cotterell
In 1976, a friend of my brother’s in Sheffield said, “here, take this, play this”. I said, “who is he”? He said Bob Marley. From the first five seconds of “Lively Up Yourself”, I was hooked. I sat and sang every bridge, every gap. If I messed it up, I’d start again… this sound is unbelievable.

Kano,‘Hoodies all Summer’ (2019) - Selected by Paige Collings
A love letter to Black Britishness, it samples documentaries like The Mangrove Nine. It subverts the criminalised idea of “hoodies,” illuminating the beauty of inner-city life and showcasing Black culture at its finest.

Album of the Month: Black History Month

For this month’s selection, we’ve handed over Album of the Month to some of our extended Worldwide FM family, asking them for albums by Black artists that rewired them, the kind of records that stay with you.

Second in our series is Leeds-based producer and DJ .

Busta Rhymes - “The Coming” and Missy Elliot’s “So Addictive”.
I think these were my introductions to the weirder sides of hip-hop. The Coming was the first album I remember listening to growing up without skipping - before A Tribe Called Quest, it’s always been Busta. I miss his weirdness, but it really shone through in his first 3 albums, both lyrically and production wise, but his first one is still next level for me. Same with Missy...icons.

OutKast - Speakerboxx “The Love Below” & J-Dilla “Donuts”
Both these albums further elevated the weirder, more experimental sides of hip-hop for me, especially during college. Both also don’t need much verbiage from me, just iconic projects and people.

D’Angelo and the Vanguard - “Black Messiah”
RIP to one of the greatest artists ever. This album, in particular, made me go back and re-appreciate his earlier works even more. “”Another Life””, in particular, with all those chord changes, really did something to my soul when I first heard it.

Jlin - “Akoma”
Jlin is so dope, it’s unreal. And she’s such a lovely person too, which is always a bonus. “”Akoma”” has such raw IDGAF energy to it that i feel is missing in some forms of electronic music. A lot of it feels really formulaic without the fun, but listening to “”Akoma””, the fun is definitely front and centre.

Cassie Kinoshi’s - “seed.” LCO and me - Gratitude.
I’m so honoured and proud to be a part of this beautiful record, this wonderful group. Cassie and everyone in seed. has a way about them where their energies just encourage you to go out of your comfort zone. Whenever I think or listen back to it, I start welling up a little bit.

*honourable mentions to KMRU and Loraine James/Whatever The Weather’s works too - other badasses in the glitchy, more ambient and experimental realms of music. They need their flowers STAT.

Albums of the Month: Bluey For Black History Month on Worldwide FM.

‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’ is this year’s theme. Power represents the influence and leadership and Pride reflects cultural identity, heritage and celebration. In that spirit, we wanted to celebrate that heritage. Bluey from Incognito curates a selection of his favourite albums by Black artists.

Bluey, as band leader and founder of , Incognito has been a part of that music landscape and legacy for decades, with a career that includes producing and playing with legends like Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan.
