My journey far from over, Anthony Joshua declares after stunning defeat

In the aftermath of his devastating knockout loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium, Anthony Joshua has broken his silence, sending a defiant message to his supporters.
Despite the shattering defeat, the former two-time heavyweight champion said he remains resolute in his determination to reclaim the world title again.
In a video statement posted on his X page on Monday, Joshua expressed his gratitude to his fans, saying, “We came up short, but look, we have to focus on all the positives. That’s the mindset, and that’s the perspective we need to adopt — a positive one.
“Look at what we’ve achieved in the space of 11 years; it’s phenomenal, and I want to thank every single one of you who has been riding with me. What a rollercoaster journey, but you know what? The problem is that it’s far from over yet.”

Retired Claudio Bravo may replace Barcelona’s injured Ter Stegen

Veteran goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has stated he would gladly step in as a temporary replacement for Barcelona’s injured Marc-André ter Stegen if needed, according to The Week on Monday.
Ter Stegen sustained a serious injury during Barcelona’s La Liga match against Villarreal on Sunday, which will keep him sidelined for an extended period.

Bravo, 41, announced his retirement from football in August after an illustrious career with Colo Colo, Real Sociedad, FC Barcelona, Manchester City, and Real Betis.
However, despite hanging up his boots, the Copa America winner appears open to a brief return if Barcelona approaches him.
Ter Stegen was visibly in pain during the Villarreal match and was swiftly replaced by backup goalkeeper Iñaki Peña.
In a Monday statement, the club confirmed, “The German international was visibly in pain and was quickly replaced by Iñaki Peña.”
In 2023, Peña, 25, extended his contract with Barcelona until June 2026, with a buyout clause of 400 million euros.

EFCC warns skit makers, others against unauthorised use of kits

This, once again, compels the EFCC to reiterate its warning to skit makers and other social workers to desist from using the operational accoutrements of the commission illegally and irresponsibly,” the statement read.

Osimhen’s mask sparks debate after injury incident in Turkey debut

Reports from Turkish media suggest that Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles striker who recently made his highly-anticipated Galatasaray debut, might face restrictions on wearing his protective face mask during matches in Turkey.
Despite contributing a crucial assist in Galatasaray’s 4-1 victory over Çaykur Rizespor, Osimhen’s mask has become a point of contention following an incident in the game.
Çaykur Rizespor’s Khusniddin Alikulov, who collided head-on with Osimhen, sustained a concussion.
Although initial fears of a facial fracture were unfounded, the injury has sparked a debate on whether Osimhen’s mask, which includes metal fasteners, poses a risk to opponents.
In a November 2021 encounter with Inter Milan, the on-loan Napoli man suffered a significant injury after a head-to-head clash with defender Milan Skriniar. The injury required surgery, during which six plates and 18 screws were inserted into his face, sidelining the Nigerian striker for three months.
Osimhen fractured his eye socket and cheekbone in Napoli’s loss to Inter Milan last November, requiring surgery, which, according to the doctor, who operated on the 22-year-old, required ‘‘six plaques and 18 screws’’ to repair the ‘‘devastating’’ damage.
And in February 2022, the club surgeon, Gianpaolo Tartaro, gave the update on the then 22-year-old Osimhen, saying he had recommended a new but smaller protective mask for the striker.

Turkey accuses Israel of expanding Gaza war to Lebanon

Turkey on Thursday accused Israel of seeking to expand the war in Gaza to Lebanon with the “alarming” wave of deadly explosions that swept through Hezbollah strongholds.
“The escalation in the region is alarming,” Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on state-run TRT television. “We see Israel mounting its attacks towards Lebanon step by step.”
The blasts have killed 32 people in two days, including two children, wounding more than 3,000 others, according to Lebanese health ministry figures.
Israel has not commented on the unprecedented operation in which Hezbollah operatives’ walkie-talkies and pagers exploded in supermarkets, at funerals and on streets.
But its defence minister Yoav Gallant, referring to Israel’s border with Lebanon, said Wednesday: “The centre of gravity is moving northward.”
Turkey blamed Israel for the blasts.
“We have come to a point where these operations carried out by Israel have become increasingly provocative, and in return, Iran, Hezbollah and elements close to them have no choice but respond,” Fidan said.

Nigerian striker Victor Olatunji made a remarkable UEFA Champions League debut, contributing both a goal and an assist in Sparta Prague’s commanding 3-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday.
Olatunji doubled Sparta Prague’s lead in the 42nd minute, finding the back of the net before assisting Qazim Laçi in the 58th minute for the team’s third goal.
Olatunji’s impressive debut earns him a spot among the select group of African players to have scored and assisted in their first Champions League appearance.
According to a football stats platform, Opta Joe, Olatunji is the third African player, and the first Nigerian, to score and assist on his UEFA Champions League debut, joining Daniel Cousin (Rangers vs Lyon, 2007) and Serge Aurier (PSG vs Shakhtar Donetsk, 2015) in this elite group.

Olubadan assures UNICEF of children’s rights protection

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Ige, has stated that he will support the realisation of the United Nations Children Funds’ objectives in Oyo State.
The Olubadan gave his word on Wednesday when the UNICEF team paid him a courtesy visit to solicit his support for the protection of children’s rights in the country.
The monarch while speaking through the Maye Olubadan,  Chief  Olalekan Alabi, at the Oke Aremo palace, Ibadan, said the choice of the Olubadan as a reference point of contact with other traditional rulers in the country, was a step in the right direction.
The monarch said, “Ibadan is the home of first in Nigeria. Ibadan has been at the forefront of political, information, social, and economic development in Nigeria. To mention just a few, the first teaching hospital, the University College Hospital (UCH) was established in Ibadan, the first university in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan was established in 1948, and the first television station in Africa was established in Ibadan.

Thus, the objectives of UNICEF towards the reduction of maternal mortality, infant mortality, and other social and health problems will be realised now that you have visited the Olubadan of Ibadanland.”
The UNICEF’s team leader, Mohammed Okorie, earlier in his address, said the rationale behind the visit was to solicit the monarch’s support for sensitization, mobilisation, and enlightenment of parents and guardians towards ensuring the protection of children’s rights.

Mr President, relieve yourself of petroleum minister role

The late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in his bestseller, The People’s Republic, said that “The primary responsibility of leadership is catering for and promoting its people to the end so that they may live a full and happy life.” This means a government should recognise the dignity of its citizens and work tirelessly to improve their lives.
Currently, it seems Nigerians are far from living a full and happy life, given the hyperinflation, rising cost of living, and the embarrassing chaos in the oil and gas industry.
President Bola Tinubu assumed office with a promise of renewed hope. Nigerians supported him, even after the unceremonious declaration at Eagles Square on May 29, 2023, and the subsequent call for patience. Many questioned the rationale behind this call when the government showed no intent to reduce the cost of governance or stop the misuse of public funds on unnecessary activities.
Nigerians’ patience wore thin by August 1, 2024, leading to nationwide protests. But that was just the beginning. The situation could worsen if the government does not address the confusion in the petroleum industry. How can Nigerians pay over 1,000 naira for fuel and still struggle to obtain it? In Tinubu’s Nigeria, people spend hours queuing at filling stations and up to N50,000 for fuel, only to find themselves back on the queue after two days. This is unsustainable and unacceptable

Drug resistance taking a toll on healthcare — Experts

Experts have said that the challenge of antimicrobial resistance is placing a heavy burden on patients and healthcare systems.
AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death, according to the World Health Organisation. As a result, medicines become ineffective, and infections persist in the body, increasing the risk of spreading to others.
Antimicrobials — including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics—are medicines used to prevent and treat infections in humans, animals, and plants. Microorganisms that develop antimicrobial resistance are sometimes referred to as “superbugs.”
The UN estimates that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths.
The World Bank estimates that AMR could result in $1 trillion in additional healthcare costs by 2050 and $1 trillion to $3.4 trillion in gross domestic product losses per year by 2030.
A recent report by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the likelihood of falling ill or dying from diseases that resist treatment has increased in Africa, with children and other vulnerable groups being most at risk.
“The continent faces the highest mortality rate from antimicrobial resistance, with 27.3 deaths per 100,000—exceeding the combined death toll from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria,” the report revealed.
