During Copenhagen Jazzfestival 2024 the collective made a film in collaboration with Eddie Bolger, who collected documentary footage in and around Copenhagen for 48 hours during the festival. Eddie’s omnivorous camera takes us to the supermarket, on a boat trip, for a run in the park, and accompanies the Barefoot musicians as they set up for a concert series at the cinema stage in Huset KBH. In seeking out new textures and unusual subjects hidden amongst the scenery of everyday life, Eddie prefigures the music of the Barefoot collective – who provide an improvised accompaniment to this unfolding raw film material, poised somewhere between soundscape and soundtrack. This short film is edited down from a full-length concert that took place as part of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival – it’s an experiment in looking with our ears.

Thanks to Tor Hammerø / TOR DE JAZZ for a nice review of Håkon Berre's new solo album "Mirror Matter":

Den norske perkusjonisten Håkon Berre gjorde danske av seg for rundt 20 år siden. Det har på ingen måte gått ut over kreativiteten. Det har derimot gått ut over vår kjennskap til Berre her hjemme. Odelsgutten fra nordre del av Trøndelag - jeg er ikke sikker på det med odelsgutt forresten, m...

Excited to announce a new release from Nana Pi/Halym Kim/Jonas Gerigk - “Planting Trees for the Festival” is out today on Barefoot Records!

Check it out on our web shop: https://barefootrecords.bandcamp.com/album/planting-trees-for-the-festival

The album “Planting Trees for the Festival“ was recorded during a residency in October 2023 at the Jazzclub Saxstall in Pohrsdorf. It contains improvised pieces that emerged instantly in several free sessions. Double bass player Jonas Gerigk invited Nana Pi and Halym Kim to work on musical group identity that evolves within one week. Besides enjoying time together with cooking, walking in the forest, having lunch with locals and family from the farmhouse, the very focussed playing and listening sessions became an effective strategy to define the music together. This album became a wonderful souvenir of an inspired and intense week of lived quality time.

Special thanks to: Eckard, Heidrun, Flora Schleiermacher and Sigrid Andreas for their hospitality at the farmhouse.

Also many thanks to Musikfonds e.V. and Koda Kultur for making this project possible.

Line-up and credits:
Nana Pi (DK) - tenor saxophone & objects
Jonas Gerigk (DE) - double bass & objects
Halym Kim (KR/DE) - drums

Recorded by Jonas Gerigk
Mixed & Mastered by Olaf Rupp
Artwork by Jonas Gerigk
Composed by Nana Pi / Halym Kim / Jonas Gerigk
Released with support from Koda Kultur and Musikfonds e.V.

🦶BAREFOOT - AT THE MOVIES, DAY 4: SATURDAY 13/7

22:30 Tomasz Dabrowski & Knut Finsrud + short film: Eyes and Horns

Praised by DownBeat Magazine as one of Europe's most versatile and curious players, Polish-born trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowski - Scandinavian-based musician and composer, makes music that whispers then screams; beautiful, open melodies merging into non-trumpet-like noise. Dąbrowski has revealed an unceasing curiosity, stretching and expanding his jazz roots in an ever-widening circle of exploration.
From the beginning he has rejected hierarchies, preferring to see creative music as a boundless practice that can accommodate ideas drawn from every spot on the stylistic map.
While plenty of musicians pivot toward new directions, sometimes transforming their aesthetic wholesale, Dabrowski has long revealed a more ruminative and holistic mindset that has allowed him to retain a clear artistic identity through countless projects, whether driven by improvisation or composition.

Knut Arne Finsrud has been active on the European music scene for a number of years and has been involved in projects involving playing on everything from rocks, water, forests, furniture, old car wrecks and bathroom porcelain to more conventional studio and live performances in Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. He plays in a number of different contexts and musical styles and has enjoyed composing music for an art project “ Music For Exercise “ 2017 and the short film ¨ Klubbhus ¨ 2012. In 2020 he was participating in The Royal Danish Theatre production of Bertolt Brecht Madame Courage in Copenhagen.

The transformation of the over masculine Minotaur inspired by Picasso’s print series ‘Vollard Suite’ leads to the destruction of boundaries of sexes.
The exploration of masculinity begins with the Minotaur, a mythical creature the artist Picasso used to portray himself in his etching print series. The Minotaur goes through a violent struggle between being male and female. Finally, the lines blur, and the boundaries of sexes disappear.

🦶BAREFOOT - AT THE MOVIES, DAY 4: SATURDAY 13/7

21:30 OLSSON|RUBIN feat. Jonas Engel + short film: Amoeba

Henrik Olsson and Ola Rubin are two well acknowledged Swedish improvisers, currently with a base in Copenhagen & Malmö, where they are involved in several projects that frequently appear on the international scene. In their duo OLSSON|RUBIN, they both immerse themselves in a hearty improvised musical dialogue that is full of energy and expressivity. They work their way towards the unheard by meticulously exploring mind-boggling sounds, rhythms and abstract sonic shapes, often rapidly shifting between these. Curiosity is at the core of this duo's identity and their interplay is reactive and dynamic.

For this event, the duo will be joined by the reed player Jonas Engel, who is active as a composing musician in the creative music scenes in Copenhagen and Cologne. He is on the constant search to further develop and redefine sound through extended playing techniques, instrument building and preparation. In addition to his compositional approaches, this work is reflected above all in his solo program through acoustic and electronic sound creation. As a soloist and with his bands “Just Another Foundry” and “OWN YOUR BONES” (e.g. Young German Jazz Award, European Tremplin Jazz Award, Maastricht Jazz Award), he has been on concert tours through Europe, South and North America, the Middle East, East Asia and Southeast Asia.
