HAEMOPHAGUS - Stream Of Shadows LP

Back in 2017, Italian Death/grind outfit Haemophagus surfaced from the underground to deliver the massively potent punch that is Stream of Shadows and prove themselves as a killer act worth following. I myself have been following the band since their second full-length, 2014's Atrocious, which was a very fun record that felt like a solid tribute to some of the greatest sounds of the Old School Death Metal era.

2017's Stream of Shadows sounds familiar to anyone who knew their previous work, but also shows them expanding their sound in a big way. In fact, with this record they have thrown in almost everything you can think of, perhaps the most out-there element being the awesome saxophone feature in the second half of the track "Meteor Mind," which does not sound out of place at all within the context of the song and record. While that is the most experimental instrumentation used on the album, there are plenty of musical ideas in the album that keep you on your toes throughout the entire ride.

Filii Nigrantium Infernalium / Bactherion (Portugal) – “Inmunditia Odii Plena” LP

Filii Nigrantium Infernalium along with Decayed and Moonspeel were part of the trident who represented the excellence and eccentricity of Southern Black Metal in Portugal, during the convulse prime of the second wave of Black Metal in the early 90’s. The Lusitanian scene spawned its unique sonority as their coetaneous did in the shores of Greece and Italy, and Filii Nigrantium Infernalium were no exception.

This anthology compiles both the quintessential “Os Métodos Do Pentagrama ” and Bactherion’s (pre-FNI) “The Miracle of Death ” demos, with an extensive booklet featuring comprehensive liner notes and photos. Depicting an even rawer version of Hellhammer and Necroshizma, these recordings synthesize a notorious disturbing maniacal riffing Black Doom inferno of schizoid vocals and shrieky eerie atmospheres.

Ectoplasma - Spitting Coffins LP

Originally written and released in 2016, this is the band's debut full-length album. There are many highlights to bring attention to here. Starting with the perfectly executed riffs, often accompanied by some nice and surprisingly catchy lead harmonies. Ectoplasma manage to walk the fine line between having implemented enough hooks and straight rocking parts, but also some accords that might give them a bit more of their own identity. The drumming is as you might expect on point, sometimes more dominant, but always very groovy at the same time. The songs are quite short and very tight, packed with all you are going to ask for. The production is a bit rough around the edges and something they have improved upon for their following outputs, but it's still fitting and absolutely serviceable. Fans who like their Death Metal raw and gritty will just love the sound on “Spitting Coffins.” If you are among those always looking for more quality Old School Death Metal, you certainly cannot go wrong here.

CULTUM INTERITUM - Veneration of The New Dawn LP

Despite the wondrous nature of debut full-length, ‘Poison Of Being’, Cultum Interitum remains very much embedded in the deepest trenches of the underground, untouched and untainted by any blight of hype or acclaim – certainly not an act I’ve noticed referenced anywhere. Second full-length, ‘Veneration Of The New Dawn’, was created by the duo of E and K.M. – the latter of whom appears to have since left the fold – and represents another impressive outburst of disgustingly corrosive black energy.

This one is divided into six movements (‘Veneration I’ – ‘Veneration VI’) and rumbles threateningly, ferociously, nihilistically with ominous intent for almost 32 minutes in total. Again, the harsh, inhuman vocals are imbued with pain, suffering, defiance and resistance, while the swirling, malevolent musicianship is of the highest and sickest calibre – twisted death worship summoned from beyond this mortal plane to embrace and celebrate the existential terror that lurks at the heart of all.

Drawing inspiration from early 90s Scandinavian death metal, their debut EP touches upon existential nihilism and blends brutality with melodicism. Their music is reminiscent of bands like Dismember and Edge of Sanity, with touches of modern revisions of Swedish death metal influences.

Highly recommended for fans of old-school Scandinavian-style death metal.

Cadaver Coils - Offerings of Rapture and Decay LP

CADAVER COILS is a Greek death metal band formed in 2021 that is actually the work of one person, Naos; “Offerings Of Rapture And Decay,” is his debut album. I don’t know anything about this guy except for one important thing: he fu***ng knows how to write death metal. This album reminds me a lot of VENOMOUS SKELETON’s album “Drowning In Circles.” The bands don’t sound alike per say but they both have that occult, straight forward death metal feel wrapped up in a rough blackened atmosphere. Production/mixing is decayed and grimy but it works very well the project’s sound—it definitely has an ancient, dangerous atmosphere to the brutality contained within. It captures each instrument perfectly, shining a black light on Naos’ obvious talent and knowledge of his abilities.

Indeed, this is an album that is wholly comfortable being what it is, nothing more and certainly nothing less. And you know what? Nothing wrong with that at all. I appreciate this singular vision, this monument of death and sickness—and a lot of other people will too. The six tracks have a run time of around 36 minutes—not super short nor is it overly long. As such, this is an album you can dive into and enjoy every moment or it can be something you can throw on if you want to head bang like it’s 1985 for a few minutes. The first track, “Wings As Blades,” hits hard and fast right out of the gate. When the forty second mark hits..it goes even faster. The song goes from one brutal beat to the other and then those utterly neco death growls arrive to complete this zombified package.

The long awaited re-release of the AGATHOCLES "Razor Sharp Daggers" full studio album, 27 years after it was recorded at the Soundshape Studios in Arendonk, Belgium. Containing 25 songs of raging intense mincecore based on the roots of minimalistic 1980's grindcore, early 80's Finnish hardcore punk, raw noisy D-beat chaos and here and there some catchy doom/sludge-like parts. Recorded with the Jan, Burt and Steve line-up in early 1995. A must have!
