This is a recording of my three hour set, opening for Nono Gigsta at Humanaut at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh. Hot Mass looms large in the mythology of the North American q***r underground and iโd heard countless stories from friends whoโd both played and danced there. Tragically, I never got to experience the old location but I can say for certain that the new spot is surely up there with the best clubs in the world.
Nono is also one of my absolute favourite DJs, and was embarking on her โfirst and onlyโ US tour, so to say this was an important gig for me is something of an understatement. As a promoter, dancer and DJ I place great importance on the art of good a warm up set and I wanted to set it up so that Nono felt comfortable to let her most mercurial and unpredictable instincts fly.
The end result was a journey through genres and eras, starting at 100 bpm and ending at 135, with a focus on drawing out shared sonic connections through disparate sounds with a common grounding in bass weight. And some contractually obligated UKG - shout out Jack!
