MEET JESSICA LANE SHEVDE

Q. What inspired your focus on older homes?

A. When I moved to Portland 10 years ago, new construction was limited, and there was growing interest in buying older homes and updating them. It felt like a natural fit, I’ve always been drawn to the puzzles that older homes offer; idiosyncrasies to embrace or resolve, discoveries along the way, and the many past lives that make up their story.

A CRAFTSMAN RENEWED / Read more at link in bio

Homeowner Emily Christensen could see the vision when she first stepped into her 1914 Mount Baker Craftsman. Period details—transoms, stained glass, and richly stained millwork—gave the house a warmth and heritage that immediately resonated with the family of five.

The kitchen, however, told a different story. Largely untouched since the 1950s, it was overdue for a renovation that could better support modern family life.

For some prospective buyers, living amid construction would be a drawback, but they were eager to make it their own. Over a six-month period, the Christensen family worked with contractor Ross Smith of Bevel, who referred them to Emily Johnston of 92 Maple Design to take on the kitchen and adjacent powder bathroom, all while maintaining the artisanal spirit that first drew them in.

WIND-SWEPT RETREAT / Read more at link in bio

The exterior form of the “bowtie,” a gently sloped shed roof, “follows the slope of the contours of the site,” says Herrin. That way, rather than “putting its face into the wind, we’re trying to do something that lets the wind come up over the top of the house.”

On the other side, a scant gable roof intersects with the shed to create a dynamic North facade. “It’s pretty unique how Heliotrope chooses to manipulate the landscape and gets the homes to sit in their settings.”

By pulling the house away from the enormous rock outcropping, Herrin could use it for wind protection, and slot in a comfortable courtyard between it and the building. The owners can enjoy the sights whether inside or out, including Mount Rainier to the south, the Olympic Mountains to the southwest, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and no matter how much the wind kicks up.

MOUNTAIN GATHERING PLACE / Read more at link in bio

The central section, or social hub, has the great room, with separate wings for the garage and media rooms on one side, and a series of guest suites on the other, the latter accessed by the glass bridge.

The great room contains the kitchen, dining room, and living room, and can comfortably host anywhere from six to forty people, such as when the owners have big gatherings like their annual Labor Day weekend pickleball tournament. The soaring interior volume is outlined by a timber framework, with metal spans that crisscross the expanse, and glass inserted between the timber trusses.

“It’s a layering of elements that really makes the scale approachable,” says Romano. Tumbled stone walls on either end of the room feature large-scale stones to a useful effect. “It’s a little counterintuitive, but the bigger that stone is, the more it helps bring the scale of the house down,” says Romano.

A NEIGHBOR HELPS REBUILD / Read more at link in bio

When the restoration crew wanted to tear out the water-damaged original woodwork, the homeowners nixed the plan. “It took a while to dry out, but that was one of our favorite things about the house which wasn’t something you could ever recreate,” said the homeowners.

Vaughan, in turn, magnified the presence of the magnificent woodwork by replicating its warmth elsewhere, including using it to ground the newly designed kitchen island, an area that previously had lacked that tonality.

Elsewhere, she replicated the original wainscoting in the powder room where she delivers a punch of color in the eye-catching Calacatta Viola marble sink.

HIGH PERFORMANCE HOME / Read more at link in bio

Atop Council Crest neighborhood sat a mid-century modern home built in 1959 whose original style had been badly muddled by a 1990s remodel. The couple who purchased it in 2022 had visions of restoring its original flair.

“Risa’s work really resonated with me,” says the homeowner, “and given the male dominance in the field of architecture, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with an all-female firm.”

“The couple had recently built a home from the ground up at Brasada Ranch and each came with design ideas, details and lessons learned,” recalls Boyer, who, in turn, recommended contractor Don Tankersley & Co. “It was our first time working with Don,” says Boyer, “but we knew DTC’s work, and their attention to detail.”

A 1929 REAWAKENING / Read more at link in bio

When the time came to remodel the primary bedroom suite and bath, Mang told Dotolo she wanted something “very moody and dramatic”.

“We didn’t know how to get the bathroom we wanted or how to make it more functional,” recalls Mang. “The original was a very small, cute 1920s-30s bathroom with a small walk-in closet. We wanted a wet room tub with shower.

Dotolo and Gentry say that most of the inspiration for the architecture came from their knowledge of the client’s style. “She likes high contrast and modern patterns that we weaved in with more traditional elements that also give a nod to the architecture.”

In the primary bath, says Dotolo, that started with the floor tile, “Mulholland Noir Blend from Ann Sacks.” The stunning walls are enrobed in black matte tile set against a crisp white oval tub.
