👋 Hey listeners! It's been a while, but we're back!

🎤 This season, we’re doing things a little differently. Yes, we’ll still have the scientists, the authors, the activists—the people doing powerful work on the frontlines of climate and conservation. But we’re also bringing ourselves to the mic a little more.

🏋️ So, if you’ve been feeling the weight of it all…welcome. If you’re still searching for ways to make a difference, or just survive the news cycle without disappearing into the void, you’re in good company. And we’re so glad you’re here.

🎧 New episodes will be dropping soon, and we’ve got some incredible guests lined up this season. Stay tuned. Stay weird. Stay mad. And stay connected.

🎤 Some of you may remember a recent episode where we interviewed former ETH producer and Filmmaker Kristin Tieche about her upcoming film The Invisible Mammal - a film about an all-women team of dedicated biologists dedicated to saving bats from a deadly fungal disease. Well, it's no longer so 'upcoming' as the WORLD PREMIERE is this Saturday at DOCLANDS Documentary Film Festival!

As a Producer on the Film, Matt shared his thoughts on a recent preview screening, and his hopes for the premiere...

📽️ 'After we did a preview screening of The Invisible Mammal an audience member said that our film was too hopeful. She told me that federal funding cuts would disrupt or bring an end to many of the conservation efforts that we featured in the documentary.

But we need to find moments that recharge us. We need to hear stories about successful conservation efforts, even if that success only represents a partial victory. We need community.

This is what I’m looking forward to the most at our upcoming premiere for The Invisible Mammal - the opportunity to build community amongst the amazing folks who worked on, and were featured in this documentary.' 🙏

With the premiere of The Invisible Mammal, we're taking a moment to appreciate these amazing creatures, and the people working to help protect them.

☠️ If you’ve spent any time online, you’ll have noticed it’s somewhat of a cesspit of overconsumption. Trends come and go, fast fashion ends up in landfill, more oil is drilled from the ground to make more plastic clothes that fall apart, more water is polluted, more people work in horrific conditions, and on the cycle goes.

📚 Seeing as people love to see a haul so much, how about normalizing some that are actually good for the environment and do not include anything to do with online shopping?! Seeing as we’re in the research phase for our next season, there’s a lot of reading going on which means lots of visits to one of Hannah’s favorite places - the library!

📔 Libraries are places that should be cherished - what other place can you go and sit inside without having to buy anything, aside from your own home?! Free education is such a rarity in this time in history, so by joining and supporting yours, you let your local government know that it is a valued resource that must be protected. By then returning your books it means you get to consume all that free knowledge without actually giving money to the capitalist enterprises that are destroying our planet. Winner 😍

💪 'I'm really excited to dig into next season, think about it, reflect on all that's going on right now and how we can take that energy, anger and frustration into something productive. Not just fester like I have been doing for the last couple of months, but to turn that into something valuable and productive and helpful for not only ourselves, but our listeners.'

💤 'We're on season break right now, but you can rest assured - we're cooking up something real special for next season!

⛔ We're taking our annual break from producing episodes, despite us having quite a lot to say in this moment! Maybe we'll be sharing some of that on here between now and when we recommence. But we'll also be doing lots of resting, regrouping, and reflecting.

🎉 There'll be a few exciting changes with the new season, which we'll share more details about over the coming months.

🙏 As always, we'd absolutely LOVE to hear from you if you have any comments, feedback, or things you'd generally just like to share about the podcast. Thank you to everyone who has listened and supported the podcast in the past year.

🎙️ For the last Earth to Humans episode of the season, Matt, Sarinah, and Hannah got together to discuss which of 2024's episodes were their favorites, and why. Highlights included episodes on eco anxiety, where they all agreed they felt 'seen', as well as Mick West's take on how to approach conspiracy theorists - an episode which seriously came in handy over the holidays!

🌐 We see conspiracy theories everywhere online and in the world, popping up in conversations with coworkers or overheard in coffee lines. It’s no wonder it can be hard to untangle this web of facts and falsities. Our latest guest takes on this challenge with a level head and persuasive evidence.

📚 Mick West, science communicator and author, is a leading voice in debunking misinformation. As the creator of Metabunk.org and author of Escaping the Rabbit Hole, Mick explores how conspiracy theories take root, why they resonate, and how to counter them with evidence-based reasoning.

🧠 Having received an adulthood aspergers diagnosis, Dr. Lisa Ann Gershwin felt like things 'finally made sense,' but that she had to get to know herself all over again.

🌊 Lisa has spent her life doing what she calls 'finding her ert' - the antidote to her feeling of inertia. This was once jellyfish, of which she has identified over 200 species, and is now biofluorescence - a mysterious biological principle which currently has no explanation for its existence in anything other than plants.

In our freshly released episode, we speak to Dr Lisa-Ann Gershwin about her journey from being dubbed 'illiterate' by the Californian government to achieving two PhDs, identifying 200+ jellyfish species, and creating a successful 'glow tour' business where she shares the magic of biofluorescence.

Having felt her whole life like she had 'parachuted into medieval Japan with no guidebook or translation', she received an aspergers diagnosis as an adult, which she said made her feel like things 'finally made sense'.

Lisa's openness, vulnerability and playful storytelling made this episode an absolute joy to create and produce - we hope you enjoy it too. Listen here
