Hey Folks, there is now a Burn Ban effective immediately across Elgin County. See below for more information.

(August 8, 2025) – Effective immediately, all open-air and recreational fires are prohibited anywhere in the City of St. Thomas, Town of Aylmer and the Townships and Municipalities within the County of Elgin. Open air fires are defined as any fire outside of a building and include bonfires, campfires, burn barrels, outdoor fireplaces/chimineas or any other fires set in open air.

Although there is some variation across Elgin County, dry conditions are consistent throughout. This fire ban is being imposed due to the extreme dryness of vegetation in the area and shall remain in effect until further notice.

If you discover an open-air fire, it is very important that you report it immediately to 9-1-1. Do not delay reporting while attempting to control or extinguish the fire. All burn permits in these municipalities are now suspended. No burn permits will be issued until the ban is lifted.

For any questions or possible exemptions within your municipality please check their appropriate website, social media, or contact the Municipality and/or fire department having jurisdiction.

Hey folks, let our suspensions rejoice, the City of St. Thomas and CN Rail are working on the rail crossing at Talbot and First TOMORROW!

From the city: First Avenue Railway Crossing Repairs Scheduled for Wednesday, July 23

The City of St. Thomas is pleased to share that long-awaited repairs to the railway crossing on First Avenue are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 23.

This update follows ongoing public concern about the condition of the crossing and a recent letter from Mayor Joe Preston, which clarified the shared responsibilities between CN Rail and the City. In recent days, CN Rail has taken important steps to move the project forward, and the City is grateful for their coordination and support.
What to Expect:

Traffic control will be in place starting at 7:00 a.m.

First Avenue will remain open, but lane closures will be in effect throughout the day.

The work is expected to be completed by end of day Wednesday, weather permitting.

The City thanks residents for their continued engagement, patience, and understanding as we work together with CN Rail to address infrastructure that matters to our community.
