You can still see some of the Civil War batteries built by Union armies in Northern Kentucky:
28 earthen artillery batteries and fortifications were built across Northern Kentucky (in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties) from 1861 to 1863 to protect Cincinnati and the Ohio River Valley.
Manned heavily by Union troops and the volunteer Black Brigade of Cincinnati, these defenses successfully deterred a Confederate advance in September 1862.

Key Surviving and Notable Batteries:
-- Battery Hooper: Located at 1402 Highland Avenue, this preserved earthworks site overlooks the Licking River valley. The surrounding Battery Hooper Park remains open to the public.

-- Shaler Battery (Southgate): Situated within Evergreen Cemetery, it is considered one of the best-preserved earthwork profiles in the region, with its former powder storage site marked by a bandstand

-- Battery Coombs / Ludlow Hill (Ludlow): One of the initial 1861 installations positioned to command the western approaches and the river.

Included the Larz Anderson Battery (Kenton County), Holt Battery (Campbell County), and Carlisle Battery. See less

New BLINK director wants the festival to grow, but stay welcoming:
“You realize, you kind of look around and you’re having this collective experience with others,” she says.
“It’s always so diverse, age wise, race wise, et cetera, and that is what I love about BLINK.”

Mooney says she wants BLINK to keep growing, and to stay welcoming for visitors, for artists and for sponsors.

Fine Wine O’Clock expanding to Bellevue, bringing Macedonian wines and Balkan flavors to Northern Kentucky:
Pere and Irena Stojanovski, who are originally from Macedonia, are preparing to open a second location of their wine bar in Bellevue, Kentucky, with plans to open in the middle of September, pending licensing and final work at the space.

The couple has spent years in the wine and hospitality industries, including working as sommeliers in fine dining and aboard cruise ships. Before opening Fine Wine O’Clock in Pleasant Ridge about three and a half years ago, they also spent six years distributing Macedonian wines to bars and restaurants.
