At Saint Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey, every freshman must complete a five day, 55 mile hike along the Appalachian Trail before advancing to sophomore year. The tradition, which has been part of the school for more than five decades, begins with months of training in fitness, teamwork, navigation, and outdoor survival skills. Students are divided into teams and assigned specific roles such as navigator, medic, cook, or captain, forcing them to depend on one another throughout the challenging journey.

School leaders say the hike is about much more than covering miles. Many students have little experience with hiking or camping, yet they are expected to work together through rain, fatigue, and difficult terrain. By the time they reach the finish at the Delaware Water Gap, they have gained resilience, confidence, and a stronger sense of community. Administrators describe the trek as a life lesson in overcoming adversity, while former students often remember it as a transformative rite of passage that taught them perseverance and teamwork long after the hike was over.

One of the coolest activities I attended at this years Appalachian Trails Days was a pop-up studio led by the current artist in residence and past “Hiker Sessions” guest.

Participants were able to engrave their trail name or a small drawing to create a colorful, ultralight titanium spoon using the process of anodizing. After watching the metal shift through a spectrum of colors, we were the happy owners of a personalized trail utensil.

We have a permanent year-round job opening at BSP! We are seeking a skilled and passionate individual to join our team and manage our IT network and security systems. Though the park is rustic, we still rely heavily on IT, and your expertise will be vital to supporting the Park’s mission. If you’re ready to make a meaningful impact in an inspiring environment, we want to hear from you!

One of the highlights of attending Appalachian Trail Days this past weekend was finally getting to meet several past Hiker Sessions guests in person for the very first time. And I’ve got to say… they were every bit as awesome as I imagined they’d be! 😃

There’s something really special about turning trail conversations into real-life connections. A huge thanks to everyone who took the time to chat and make the weekend such a memorable experience!
