Meet the previous winners of the Anthology Poetry Competition!

Frank Lowry, a retired teacher from England, won our 2023 competition with his beautiful poem 'Telescope'. After a long career teaching History, his poetry writing is strongly encouraged by his stepson, Tom Latham, who, he says, ‘kept me on my toes with his forthright critical reviews!’

In the heart of Trastevere there is a bar that never closes.

Bar San Calisto is a place that seems to exist outside of time. It exists at midnight as it does dawn; in 2022 as it did in 1960. In a way, it feels as eternal as the city that it stands in. Upon first glance, it is a place without a name – a sign ‘Bar’ is affixed to an otherwise unremarkable apartment façade. The lack of adornment makes it somewhere much easier to stumble across than to search for. Because of this, I like to think that I didn’t discover this place but that it discovered me.

Bar Calisto is the winning entry of the 2024 Anthology Travel Writing Competition. The 2025 competition is still open for entries - share your adventures with us!

With the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers winding through its heart and surrounded by mountains, Chongqing is known as the ‘Mountain City'. This fascinating metropolis is as dramatic as its landscape.

With limited flat land, the city has developed vertically: buildings often have multiple street-level entrances and elevators scale cliffs to connect neighbourhoods. Roads layer up to five levels, and some underground streets reach thirty floors deep.

The Regent Hotel in Chongqing makes for the perfect base while exploring the city. This luxurious 5-star hotel combines modern elegance with traditional Chinese design. Rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, with warm wood furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows to let in the natural light.

Travel through time with a stay at a historic Madeiran Quinta 🌺🌼🌸

When holidaying in Madeira, most visitors will like to base themselves in the capital, Funchal, a picturesque and welcoming city that overlooks the main harbour and is close to all the historic and natural attractions of the island. However, to get a real feel for the cultural heritage, by far the best option is to stay one of the island’s Quintas, spectacular manor houses surrounded by luscious gardens and built in a style of architecture unique to Madeira. Each one is part of the history of the island and tells its own unique story.

Discover some of the most beautiful and luxurious Quintas here: https://anthology-magazine.com/travel/quintas/
