In Niger, radio isn’t just entertainment — it’s a lifeline for learning, connection, and change. 📻

Dandalin Iyali (“Family Forum”) became a space where families listened, debated, and reflected together. Over 72 episodes — supported by talk shows, listening clubs, and community discussions — people across Niger began rethinking traditions around education, early marriage, and gender-based violence.

What started as a drama grew into a movement — one that turned listeners into changemakers.

In Zambia, talking about sexual and reproductive health is often considered taboo.

PMC’s Insaka Ya Bumi (“Community Health Dialogue Forum”) radio show changed that by opening up space for honest discussions about family planning, maternal health, and HIV prevention.

An evaluation in five districts found that exposure to the show led to higher use of maternal and HIV services, demonstrating that even in challenging topics, entertainment-education can spark real health impact.

In Nepal, child marriage remains a persistent challenge, often shaped by deep-rooted traditions and social norms.

To explore these issues, the impact of our show, and to co-create solutions with the audience, PMC piloted an innovative approach: participatory clay modeling.

Through this activity, community members—especially adolescents—created symbolic clay figures inspired by our radio show Mai Sari Sunakhari ("Orchid, Like Me"), sparking new interpretations and conversations about gender equality, family planning, and child marriage.

This creative method revealed how storytelling and art can unlock dialogue around taboo topics and help shift social norms.

Some stories you listen to. Others you live through. 🎙️

In Zambia’s Southern Province, Kasensa Kabuumi (“Fountain of Life ”) — a bold four-part radio miniseries — turned the airwaves into a lifeline, sparking dialogue on HIV prevention, family planning, and gender-based violence.

The impact spoke volumes:
📈 80% of listeners encouraged others to get tested for HIV
📈 92% said they would report gender-based violence
📈 Access to family planning expanded through new, trusted channels

Beyond the drama, communities engaged through live talk shows, local exhibitions, and dialogue circles — proving that radio can be more than entertainment. It can be a mirror, a catalyst, and a path toward change.

🕊️ In Loving Memory of Dr. Jane Goodall (1934–2025)
We join the world in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, whose groundbreaking work forever transformed how we understand our planet — and our responsibility to protect it.

At Population Media Center, we were deeply honored to collaborate with the Jane Goodall Institute to produce Pambazuko (“New Dawn”) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a radio drama that inspired hundreds of thousands to embrace family planning, postnatal care, and great ape conservation. This project reflected Jane’s enduring belief: that when we empower communities and protect nature, we build a better world for all.

Her vision continues to inspire our work to this day.
Rest in peace, Jane. Thank you for showing us what one voice — one story — can do. 🌍🕊️

What if entertainment and media could shift mindsets, challenge social norms, and create healthier communities — all through story?

Today, our founder, Bill Ryerson, is in North Carolina to share how storytelling is being used to spark social and environmental transformation in communities around the world. From women’s rights to climate resilience, this dialogue explores how fiction can lead to lasting change.

Moderated by Professor Oyindamola Akinso and hosted by Davidson College, this event is part of a global conversation about media, impact, and the future we can build together.
