At Population Media Center, we believe in the power of storytelling to drive social change. That’s why Papás x siempre — our newest social impact project in Mexico, created in collaboration with Rosy Ocampo and TelevisaUnivision — brings urgent issues like gender-based violence, adolescent pregnancy, STIs, and new masculinities to the screen in a way that’s both powerful and deeply human.

To amplify its reach, we recently hosted a workshop in Mexico City with our incredible partners: UNFPA México, UNICEF México,Consejo Nacional de Población, Mexfam A.C., and . Together, we aligned efforts and co-created strategies to ensure this story reaches — and impacts — even more people. Because when stories reflect real-life experiences, they can spark empathy, challenge norms, and inspire action.

Papás x Siempre — coming soon.

In July, PMC’s Director of Research, Evaluation, and Impact, Amy Henderson Riley, joined partners in Mexico City to celebrate the upcoming launch of Papás por Siempre ("Parents Forever") — a new telenovela produced by Rosy Ocampo and TelevisaUnivision in collaboration with Population Media Center.

During the event, cast members, producers, journalists, and health leaders came together to explore how entertainment can drive meaningful conversations around gender, violence, and sexual health. The team also shared impact data from Papás por Conveniencia, the first season of the project — reinforcing how stories grounded in science can spark real social change.

As Amy shared in her reflections: “This work can spark dialogue and shift perspectives in ways no lecture or PSA ever could.”

Right now, humanity is using natural resources 1.8 times faster than the Earth can regenerate them. This ecological overshoot drives climate breakdown, deepens inequality, and threatens the health and well-being of people and the planet alike.

At Population Media Center, we believe in rewriting this story. Through entertaining, locally driven media, we empower individuals—especially women and girls—to make informed choices about their health, families, and futures. And in doing so, we shift the systems that shape our world.

To create a just and sustainable future, we must —pushing back the moment each year when we exceed Earth’s capacity.

In the hills of Nepal’s Far West and Karnali provinces, stories that once drifted through the airwaves are now taking shape in the most unexpected way: clay.

When 𝑀𝑎𝑖 𝑆𝑎𝑟𝑖 𝑆𝑢𝑛𝑎𝑘ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑖 (“Orchid Like Me”) first aired in 2016, its characters—especially Junimaya—became familiar voices for thousands of listeners, tackling issues like child marriage, girls’ education, and gender inequality. Now, nearly a decade later, PMC-Nepal’s rebroadcast is doing more than retelling this beloved story. It’s inviting listeners to mold its lessons into something personal.

Listeners tuned in - not just to hear each episode, but to reflect and respond. And those responses aren't just words; they’re sculptures:
🕊️ A bird trapped in a cage, expressing the loss of freedom through child marriage.
🌸 A flower standing tall, symbolizing resilience and hope.
👩👧👦 Small figurines embracing, honoring collective strength against harmful traditions.

These clay creations emerged from community discussions, shadow puppet performances, youth clubs, and even viral YouTube clips of Junimaya Ko Katha, a bite-sized adaptation of the drama’s core themes.

By blending storytelling with touchable, visible acts of expression, PMC-Nepal is showing that behavior change begins not just with what we hear—but what we feel, what we create, and what we share.

This is community dialogue made tangible—one handful of clay at a time.

In Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, where HIV rates are among the highest in the country, 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑎𝑘𝑎 𝑌𝑎 𝐵𝑢𝑚𝑖 (“Community Health Dialogue Forum”) brought families, health experts, and local voices together every week across 8 radio stations—tackling HIV, gender-based violence, and reproductive health head-on - creating space for informed decisions and community support.

The impact speaks for itself:
9 in 10 listeners knew where to access family planning
68% of listeners knew where to seek help for gender-based violence

Through storytelling, expert interviews, and listener engagement, Insaka Ya Bumi became more than a show—it became a movement.

What happens when storytelling speaks the language of the people it’s meant to serve?

In Zambia, where HIV, early marriage, teen pregnancy, and gender-based violence shape daily life, Population Media Center partnered with local leaders, educators, and creatives to spark conversations that often stay unspoken.

Together, we transformed classrooms, radio stations, and everyday community spaces into trusted places for learning, reflection, and connection—centering the voices of young people, survivors, and families.

This work came to life through three standout projects:

📚 A comic book with a cause.
Dambo Lathu brought vivid illustrations and into classrooms. Students not only gained critical knowledge—they found a safe space to talk, reflect, and reimagine their futures.

🎙️ Powerful stories, real action.
Kasensa Kabuumi delivered a four-part radio drama that sparked powerful conversations across Southern Province. Among exposed listeners, awareness of One-Stop Centers rose to 71.3% (up from 47.6%), and trust in local family planning services grew—evidence that the stories didn’t just resonate, they made an impact.

🌍 A province-wide conversation.
Insaka Ya Bumi reached eight radio stations with a dynamic mix of short fictional stories, expert guests, live listener call-ins, and interactive quizzes. The program became a consistent space for learning, community reflection, and public engagement.

These projects prove one thing: when communities lead the conversation, lives change.
