NEW in the blog: How I Learned To Cope With My Mental Health In MY South Asian Family"

In this new blog piece, contributor Naila Syed recounts her own experiences with mental health and her family to discuss the stigma of mental health in the South Asian community.

Read here: https://shamelessmag.com/blog/entry/how-i-learned-to-cope-with-my-mental-health-in-my-south-asian-family

New in the blog: Ruby Condon analyzes retailer Brandy Melville's toxic business model, from their discriminatory hiring practices to their unethical clothing manufacturing.

"Customers often report an intense feeling of judgment and the need to “prove themselves” when they enter the store. I myself have had many discussions with my friends about the discomfort of the in-store experience."

New in the blog: It's Time For The Feminist Movement To Leave TERFs Behind - Eleni Vlahiotis

"TERFs attempts to boil womanhood down to a singular experience ignores intersectionality entirely. It erases the unique gender experience of Black women, Indigenous women, women of colour, disabled women, financially insecure women, and any other woman who is not white and cisgender. There is no universal experience of womanhood. It is much more complex."

Using feminism to justify anti-trans sentiment is nothing new — it’s been a tactic since the origin of radical feminism in the 1960s and 70s. What is new is the rise in platforming transphobic rhetoric in Canadian mainstream media.

Best of the Blog, Issue 44: To Exist Outside of a Culture of "Hustling" by Taheelah Kishiya Cameron.

"Hustle culture and the push to rise up has taken away from people’s own growth and self-realization. It encourages focusing on what one lacks rather than appreciating what one has. I believe that for many, it has taken away from finding pleasure in feelings of nostalgia in fear of confronting one’s past and a time of less productivity. Whether or not it is the intent, the end result is rarely living in the moment, and instead hunting for validation through the hyper focus of 'hustle.'"

When it comes to “girl bosses,” hustle culture has become an extension of a commoditized and branded feminism – with Black women its biggest victims.
