Poland has asked the European Commission to investigate TikTok over AI-generated videos promoting “Polexit,” which Warsaw says are almost certainly Russian disinformation. Officials flagged Russian linguistic patterns and synthetic audiovisual content as threats to public order and democratic processes. Platforms must comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act or face fines.
This incident fits a wider pattern of Russia exploiting generative AI in influence campaigns. Networks like Storm-1516 use AI to craft fake personas, deepfake visuals, and synthetic narratives that spread false claims about Western politics, Ukraine, and EU unity across social media. These operations leverage high-volume, AI-produced material to make propaganda appear native and credible, widening reach and bypassing moderation.
The result is a systemic push to flood online platforms and even AI chatbots with pro-Kremlin narratives, making it harder for users to separate fact from fiction.
