"The Biscayne Poet" is a Miami persona created decades ago by poet Oscar Fuentes. Armed with a vintage typewriter, The Biscayne Poet brings poetry to the masses, one person at a time. Concurrently, Oscar serves as the manager of Miami-Dade Public Library System's permanent art collection consisting of more than 7000 works. Therefore, it was fitting to invite individuals touched by The Biscayne Poet's words to read their personalized poems at the main branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System located downtown.

Earlier this year, FIU Global and the Green School, led by the Maurice A. Ferré Institute for Civic Leadership and in partnership with the Mohsin & Fauzia Jaffer Center for Muslim World Studies, hosted a cohort of 24 undergraduate students visiting from Iraq as part of a youth leadership exchange program.

The visiting students immersed themselves in the FIU campus community, connecting with students, staff, faculty, and local partners, as well as key community, religious, and government leaders in South Florida. The Copperbridge Foundation sponsored a lunch at their cultural arts hub, The Copper, as well as a community tour with stops at the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MOCA) in North Miami, the Green Space Miami in Little Haiti, the Wynwood Walls, and Books & Books in Coral Gables.

We embedded ourselves with the group as they experienced contemporary art for the first time and took the opportunity to learn about their day-to-day challenges and why many of the existential problems on which the West concentrates are not issues Iraqis have the time to address. Their concerns are more on basic needs.

This documentary short was directed by Aaron Glickman, filmed by Alec Kreisberg, and is part of an ongoing series produced by Meme Ferré and Aaron Glickman.
