Frosty roads need to be treated with respect. Avoid sudden hard braking, this may mean following further back from cars in front.

The winter frosts we’re experiencing in the colder parts of the country can make roads slipperier than you'd expect.

Adjust your speed: Slow down and avoid sudden braking or turning. By slowing down and increasing your following distance you'll significantly reduce the likelihood of crashing.

Slow down on bridges, flyovers, in tunnels, and shady patches on the road – these parts of a road cool down more quickly and may remain slippery for longer – and be especially careful in the early morning.

Conditions can change quickly, so remember to turn your headlights on dipped if it's raining, icy, snowing, or foggy. Many of us have silver, grey, or white vehicles which easily blend into the road, grey sky, and snow. Having your headlights on dipped makes you more visible to everyone and helps you see the road.

When the weather is bad, always check our pages to see if state highways are affected before you travel. You can find more information in this post: https://www.facebook.com/nztransportagency/posts/pfbid0FSzkpU3WTJ7YDcNHKQGD6KjfbxEqSWQgvezDsHB8VZgoxtTMTmS6j5erpU55NPRzl

🔴Beware the water!

Whenever you drive over water, direct tyre contact with the tarmac will lessen. At speed, you loose contact completely which means lost traction.

Please remember this when travelling at higher speeds, we don't want you to be one of the daily serious crashes we send alerts for.

CURRENT UPDATE AS OF 12.41PM

Taranaki roading crews working to clear slips and debris

Roading crews throughout Taranaki are working to open as much of the state highway network as quickly as possible, following heavy rainfall in the region.

As at 12.45pm:

" SH3 at Mt Messenger - southbound lane CLOSED. Traffic management is in place

" SH3 Awakino Gorge CLOSED between Oha Street and Papakauri Life On The Road NZ

" SH43 Forgotten World Highway CLOSED (between Whangamomona and Taumaranui - although non-essential travel along the entire route is not advised)

" SH4 Whanganui to Raetihi CLOSED but it will open as scheduled this afternoon, following the completion of planned repair work

Crews are currently onsite at SH43 and at Awakino Gorge working to clear slips and debris from those state highways.

Crews are also continuing to assess damage from potholes on the network, as a result of the heavy rain.

The southbound lane of State Highway 3 at Mt Messenger will remain closed over the weekend, with geotechnical experts examining the slip below the road.

Please avoid unnecessary travel if possible, and expect delays of at least 25 minutes.

As the heavy rain continues, crews are closely monitoring all state highways around the region for further damage.

NZTA is reminding people to take care and be alert for other areas with flooding or debris. Please drive carefully if you must travel.

Another update is planned later this afternoon.

In the meantime, road users can keep up to date with the NZTA Journey Planner.
