What would you do?
Watching the news every evening, seeing people in Ukraine staying in their homes despite the Russian invasion moving closer, I have tried to imagine what it would be like to have your country invaded. Below is my short fictional piece attempting to imagine it happening in Australia. I am sure I have not done such a catastrophe justice. Neither do I know if you would or could see signs of incoming missiles at night. I am sure someone will put me right. The point of the story is to stop and imagine how you might react.

A New Historical Novel by Gillian Long The 9th District is set in Australia during the Great Depression when men’s lives are cheap, immigrants are expendable, and a mysterious disease is sweeping through the cane fields. Mark Anders has had enough. He challenges the powerful sugar industry, and the fight becomes brutal. The novel is based on actual events in the 1930s when global conflicts played out in the streets, farms, and in the sugar workers' barracks of the small sugar towns of Far North Queensland.
