Y'all know I lead a pretty strange life full of eclectic activities, but my primary professional gig has been, since the 1980s, journalism. I was a full-time staffer until 2000, and won my share of honors and awards back then. I've been writing freelance on the regular ever since.

It's been a long time since an editor entered my work in any contest. (Reporters typically don't get to nominate themselves.) What an honor to have my work selected not only by my editor, Marga Kellogg Cooley of Santa Maria Times, but also to have been selected as a top-five finalist in not one but three categories!

(Thanks, Rick Jackoway, for entering my work years ago as a freelancer at SLO New Times. We took top honors back then.)

Well, RIP Facebook. There’s no search anymore, just the AI assist. I was looking for a post by a friend about a recently dearly departed mutual friend. Instead, the AI messaged me the definition of his last name five minutes later. It’s been fun, a time suck, and now I think I’ll wean myself away. I like to see what my friends and fam are doing, but fewer and fewer share anything but memes. Time to go back to email, phone, in-person or just solo life on the farm.
