The Hardcore Retro God, Review #96 - Tiny Toon Adventures 1 & 2: Babs' Big Break / Montana's Movie Madness (Game Boy, Part C)

Despite the arduous months of production & planning, we're finally back with another TINY TOONS segment - with 2 portable twists, of course!

BABS' BIG BREAK (1992): Babs' acting dream comes to fruition - while Buster, Plucky & Hamton attempt to catch up with her along the way to the Acme Theater. However, Montana Max intends to buy up the place... Not if the 3 can help it!

MONTANA'S MOVIE MADNESS (1993): Buster warps into the variety of "B-grade films" directed by and starring the spoiled rich little prick presented at his own theater, one might add - Western, Japanese, Sci-Fi & Horror - and ending with his own home studio at Acme, as Buster outwits Max's cronies without missing a beat.

3 more segments still remain: Buster Busts Loose! (Super NES) / Buster's Hidden Treasure (Genesis) / Animaniacs (Super NES, Genesis, Game Boy).

Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole (Genesis) - Gameplay Sample 1

A collaborative effort between SEGA and the long-since-defunct Climax Entertainment, LANDSTALKER (an isometric action-RPG, predating Treasure's LIGHT CRUSADER) revolves around a determined treasure-hunter elf by the name of Nigel and his accompanying wood nymph Friday - destined to seek out the treasure of King Nole- who wasn't heard from again after making a hasty disappearance while the King's subjects stormed the castle and being deemed less than popular. Therefore, Nigel and Friday are hell-bent on solving its lingering mystery, in addition to healing the long-suffering scars plaguing the land of Mercator and eventually finding the long-since-vanished King's treasures in order to retire wealthy.

Did I forget to mention that there was even a Super Famicom spin-off released 2 years later, LADY STALKER (published by Taito)?

RANDOM FUN FACT OF THE WEEKEND (no deception intended):

The late Mario Segale (1934-2018), a real estate developer/businessman involved with tons of projects in Seattle since the '50s, was the inspiration for Nintendo's ICONIC ITALIAN PLUMBER - especially when he leased warehouse space to the company's American branch in the early '80s.

Mario Segale was not a game designer, programmer, or cartoon mascot creator. He was a real estate businessman in Washington, and in the early 1980s, Nintendo of America rented warehouse space from him while the company was still trying to gain ground in the United States. At the time, Nintendo was not yet the giant most people know today. It was still pushing its arcade business and trying to find a foothold in a tough market.

According to the popular story, Nintendo fell behind on rent, and Segale confronted the company about the overdue payment. Instead of removing them from the property, he reportedly gave them more time to settle what they owed. Around that same period, Nintendo was working on the character who first appeared in Donkey Kong. Before he became Mario, he was simply called “Jumpman,” a little carpenter trying to rescue a woman from a giant ape.

The character was later named Mario, reportedly after Mario Segale himself. It was a small inside reference that became one of the most famous names in gaming history. The funny part is that Segale was not seeking fame from it, and for most of his life, he stayed far away from the spotlight. A landlord’s name quietly became attached to a character who would help define video games for generations.
