Murder suspect confesses as community consults local deity

The Nkrankwanta Township in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region was thrown into a state of disbelief when a Fulani nomad self-confessed murdering a mobile phone vender in the area.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered from the community that the deceased Japhet Yeboah was shot dead at his mobile vending shop at Nkrankwanta on February 18, 2025, and he had since been buried.

Only known as Yusif, the suspect, a popularly Fulani herdsman who sells cattle in the area reportedly walked to some elders of the town and confessed the crime.

Mr Issifu Basoma, the Assembly Member for the Asuopiri Electoral Area confirmed to the GNA the suspect had been placed in custody, assisting Police investigations.

He explained that the suspect made the confession after some opinion leaders of the town consulted the local shrine to help apprehend those involved in the crime.

As required by tradition of the community, Mr Basoma said the people poured libation and performed some rituals to invoke the wrath of the local deity, saying the suspect approached some elders, and confessed the crime accordingly.

He said the suspect also led the elders to a location where they retrieved a pistol, he allegedly used to commit the crime, and other sharp objects.

A source at the Nkrankwanta Police station also confirmed the detention of the suspect to the GNA and added he (suspect) was still under investigation.

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Black Stars annihilate Chad in Accra to go top of Group I

Five different players on the scoresheet for Ghana in their emphatic 5-0 win over Chad at the Ohene Gyan Stadium to clinch top-spot in Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

The Black Stars made a very explosive start to the game and opened the scoring account in just a minute into the game through Antoine Semenyo who struck from a close range after a huge scramble in the box.

The Chadians despite completing the first half without any shot on target came close at certain point and earned themselves a free kick which eventually resulted into a wasted corner kick.

Ghana came so close on two occasions in trying to doubling their lead but Kudus Mohammed had his free kick miss the post by inches while Jordan Ayew blasted wide a sitter few moments later.

In the 31st minute, Athletic Club forward Inaki Williams headed from Schindler's cross to increase the tally. Just five minutes later, captain Jordan Ayew also converted a spot-kick to hand Ghana a 3-0 lead at half-time

In the second half, the Black Stars returned on a blistering note again and made series of incursions in the opening minutes but kept squandering their chances.

French-based defender Mohammed Salisu got the fourth goal in the 56th minute after heading into the net from Ernest Nuamah's corner kick as the riots continues.

Ernest Nuamah continued with his red-hot scoring form after striking from a close range to get the fifth goal after a beautiful combination with Jordan Ayew. It finished 5-0 for the Black Stars after full-time.

Ghana after the win have now moved to the summit of Group I with 12 points and will play Madagascar in match-day six of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Al Hoceima, Morocco.
