Episode #650 "Wollongong's Pa******le Network and the Murder of Frank Arkell"

Frank Arkell was Wollongong’s long-serving lord mayor and state MP (1974-1991), known for his flamboyant style and tireless advocacy for the city during a period of economic upheaval.

Though widely respected in public, allegations about his private life and suspected links to a pa******le ring began to arise in later years.

In 1998, Arkell was brutally murdered - a crime that shocked the city and brought those suspicions into sharper focus.

In this episode, we speak with historian Erik Eklund, author of Pride, Politics and Perversion, a biography of Arkell.

During World War II, Melbourne hosted American soldiers as part of the Allied effort, and the city enforced "brownouts"—partial blackouts to obscure urban areas from potential air raids.

Among the soldiers was Edward Leonski, whose self-confessed fixation on women's voices led to the tragic murders of Ivy Violet McLeod, Pauline Thompson and Gladys Hosking.

Joining us on today's episode is Luke C. Jackson, one of the creators of The Brownout Murders, a graphic novel that examines the fear, fortitude and social change sparked by this dark chapter in Melbourne’s history.

Episode #635 "The Brownout Strangler" is available now.

At the time of this post, 29 women have been murdered in Australia in 2025.

That's approximately one woman every five days.

Our guest this week is Sherele Moody, a journalist who has dedicated her career to documenting femicide and child deaths across the country.

Sherele's passion for this issue stems from her own experiences, including the crimes of her stepfather, Barry Hadlow.

Barry Hadlow was convicted of killing two young girls: five-year-old Sandra Bacon in 1962 and nine-year-old Stacey-Ann Tracy, 36 years ago this week.

Sherele's work can be found on her instagram and website, Australian Femicide Watch (link in comments). Also pictured here is Sherele standing in front of the She Matters mural in Melbourne, which can still be visited in Hosier Lane.

Episode #627, "The Hidden Numbers Behind Femicide and Child Death in Australia," is available now.
