Pete Voth’s beard lives to fight another day.
Dover broke open a one-run game with four runs in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday to earn an 8-3 victory at Okarche.
“I only shave after a loss,” said Voth, Dover’s coach who watched his team improve to 11-0 on the season. The Longhorns are currently the No. 2-ranked team in Class B.
Sporting a lineup with considerably less experience than the squads that swept the Class A fall and spring state championships a year ago, Okarche fell to 3-6 with its third straight loss.
Those losses were to Canute (No. 2 in Class A), Fort Cobb-Broxton (No. 1 in Class B) and now the Longhorns.
Okarche is currently 11th in Class A.
Dover staked a 4-1 lead with three runs in the third despite not getting a hit in the inning.
The Longhorns capitalized on a hit batter, catcher’s interference, an error, two walks with the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly that earned Sloan Merrill an RBI.
During all that, Okarche skipper Ryan Beaman plugged Court Sumrall onto the mound in relief of Jake Henderson.
The Warriors got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame, but left several potential runs on the bases.
A Dover error was followed by a pair of Warrior singles to load the bases with nobody out.
Longhorn starter Trypp Lack nearly got out of the frame as he coaxed a pair of shallow fly balls, but Sutton Terrell’s single plated a run.
The home team threatened again in the fifth.
Canon Rother led off with a single and Henderson was hit by a pitch to start the potential rally.
Cooper Anderson gave it more hope with a single to send Rother home.
The Warriors were still threatening with nobody out before Lack earned a strikeout, a flyout to center and then a sharply-hit lineout by Sumrall that was caught by Casen Buck at shortstop.
Sumrall kept Dover’s bats quiet until the seventh inning when Brok Cooper started the Longhorn surge with a leadoff double.
Later in the frame, Ivan Ruiz pushed a run home with a double and Merrill scored two more with a double of his own.
Daxx Compton’s RBI single gave Dover the 8-3 lead.
Lack pitched into the seventh, but a Dover error on a potential double-play ball to end the game put an end to his night.
Sadler Greb came on in relief and, after walking the first batter he faced, struck out the final two Warrior batters.
Rother was 3 for 4 for the Warriors while Henderson, Anderson and Jett Yost had two hits apiece.
Okarche had 10 hits, but also struck out 10 times.
Cooper, Merrill and A.J. Avila had two hits apiece for the Longhorns, who also had 10 hits as a team. Merrill had 3 RBis while Cooper and Buck both scored two runs.
Lack gave up 10 hits and two earned runs over his 6 ⅓ innings. The senior struck out seven without surrendering a walk.
Dover’s schedule is heating up as it travels to Amber-Pocasset (No. 9 in A) on Thursday, hosts Drummond (No. 10 in B) on Friday and then plays Dale (No. 2 in 2A) and Fort Cobb-Broxton next Monday and Tuesday.
