SASCO’s STATEMENT ON RECKLESS DRIVING INCIDENT INVOLVING UMP STUDENTS

Revolutionary greetings and salutations to all esteemed foot-soldiers, members, sympathisers of the Students' Congress (SASCO) in the university, the entire UMP student population.

SASCO is outraged and appalled by the gross negligence and recklessness exhibited by a taxi driver whose actions led to a near-tragic accident involving 11 University of Mpumalanga students on Monday, 26 August 2024.
Despite allegedly being aware of critical mechanical issues, specifically faulty brakes, the driver chose to continue operating the vehicle, prioritising profits over the safety of our students. This displays an alarming disregard for human life, which deeply concerns us as student leaders.

As SASCO, we unequivocally condemn this reckless behavior and demand that those responsible are held to account. The safety and well-being of our students are non-negotiable. We refuse to tolerate such irresponsible actions from drivers who are entrusted with the care of students.
Operators who put lives at risk by ignoring safety protocols must be held accountable for their actions.

Although we are relieved that no one was physically injured in the accident, we recognise the severe psychological and emotional trauma that this incident has caused the affected students. The trauma alone is an unacceptable consequence that should have never been endured.
We've called upon the Top Star Mbombela Taxi Association to take immediate and decisive action to hold this driver accountable for his negligence.

SASCO remains committed to fighting for the rights, safety, and dignity of all students. We will continue to fight tirelessly to ensure that incidents like these are prevented and that those who jeopardise student safety face appropriate consequences.
We will not hesitate to escalate actions if necessary to safeguard the rights and welfare of our students.

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF SASCO UMP MBOMBELA 2024 BRANCH EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
