Crazy how expensive ingredients have gotten 🥴

I gave one of my costing students homework to calculate the cost of her own vanilla layer cake and it came back around +/-R300 ..

And mind you, her labour was only R120 per hour.

Why you can’t sell/expect a custom cake for R200

A proper 7 inch 4-layer cake for R200 just doesnt add up for a home baker.

What you are seeing is only a basic 2-layer cake with what we as home bakers call a first coat not a final coat.To reach a custom cake standard you still need extra layers (about two or even three more) filling if the customer requests it, a final coat, decoration, packaging,your labour and profit.

Big shops bake in bulk and buy ingredients at much lower prices than home bakers ever can.

If you do your costing properly you will notice that as a baker or customer demanding custom cake for R200 or even R400 is simply robbing the baker 🤞🏽

When you price your cakes properly you are not being expensive or overcharging ,you are simply covering your costs and valuing your skill and time.
