Author turns prison past into message of hope

BRONKHORSTSPRUIT - Thapelo Masokoane from Bronkhorstspruit knows what it means to start over. The author, poet and inspirational speaker spent time in prison after a string of poor choices.

In 2021 he put that experience on paper with his self-published memoir "From Prison to Pulpit" and now uses the BornAgenius brand to pass the lessons on.

The book is not fiction. It's his own account of hardship and the spiritual shift that followed.

That message drives his work with young people. He believes the next generation can avoid learning the hard way if they grasp accountability and resilience early.

“Setbacks are not the end of the road,” he says. “Every challenge can become a stepping stone toward purpose and success, " he said.

Putting the book together meant facing his past head-on. He spent months in prayer and reflection, mapping events chronologically to show the full arc from prison cell to pulpit. Reliving regret was the toughest part. The reward came when he saw pain turn into a tool for others.

Thapelo wants readers to question stigma around criminal records and to see God’s grace as a path to transformation. “Your circumstances do not define your identity or potential,” he writes.

From Prison to Pulpit is his first title. Self-publishing gave him control of the narrative, though it came with its own challenges. He’s now working on "Post-Matric" Crisis aimed at the youth navigating life after school.

For him, the book’s job isn’t done until readers act on it. “Embrace responsibility, pursue positive change, and refuse to let past failures define you,” he says. “Then become an agent of hope in your own community.”

Tshwane given twelve months to relocate 500 Kanana Village households

Pretoria - The Supreme Court of Appeal has dismissed the City of Tshwane’s attempt to expropriate private land near Bronkhorstspruit, ending a legal fight that has lasted more than two decades.

In a unanimous judgment by Judge Daisy Molefe, the court ruled the municipality’s expropriation process was unlawful and could not be used to circumvent an existing eviction order. The City was ordered to relocate about 500 households at Kanana Village within a year.

Kanana Village near Bronkhorstspruit was established 21 years ago on the farm Kameelzynkraal, east of Pretoria, after owner Ben Gomeni invited families displaced by unlawful evictions to occupy the land. He planned to formalise the settlement but died in December 2005.

The farm was sold to Summer Seasons Trading in March 2006. The new owner brought an eviction application in 2011. Lawyers for Human Rights, representing the occupiers, lost an appeal at the Constitutional Court. High court orders later confirmed the eviction and directed the City to provide alternative accommodation.

Instead, Tshwane issued an expropriation notice. The High Court declared it invalid for failing to follow due process. The SCA has now upheld that decision.
