Eastern Cape police have launched a massive manhunt following a prison break at Afsondering Police Station in Maluti on Saturday, 4 April 2026. Eight detainees managed to escape the holding cells, prompting an urgent provincial search operation.

​Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that investigations are underway to determine how the escape occurred. Authorities are also looking into a case of aiding and abetting to see if the fugitives had help from outside the station.
​The eight escapees have been identified as:
​Asiphe Yawu
Abraham Gobozi
Kwanele Mzala
Siphelele Mkhulisi
Thabo Nana
Siphelele Nondolo
Anele Ludidi
Sinethemba Mazendala

​These individuals are considered dangerous and should not be approached.
