The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah, the Most High, said:
“O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden among you, so do not oppress one another…
O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I guide, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you…
O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you…
If the first of you and the last of you, the humans and the jinn, were as righteous as the most righteous heart among you, it would not increase My kingdom.
And if you were all as wicked as the most wicked heart, it would not decrease My kingdom…
It is only your deeds that I account for you and then recompense you for. So whoever finds good, let him praise Allah. And whoever finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.”
— Sahih Muslim (Hadith Qudsi)
🌿 Explanation & Reflection
1. “I have forbidden oppression for Myself…”
Allah begins with justice.
He tells us that ظلم (oppression, injustice, harming others) is so serious that He has forbidden it even upon Himself — meaning He will never wrong you. Not in your رزق. Not in your pain. Not in your tests. Not in your akhirah.
If something hurts you, it is never random and never unjust.
And then He commands us: don’t wrong each other.
No backbiting. No emotional manipulation. No silent cruelty. No abuse of power. Justice is sacred.
2. “All of you are astray except those whom I guide…”
This line humbles the ego.
Guidance isn’t because we’re smarter. Or born into the “right” family. Or more religious looking.
It is a gift.
And the most comforting part? He tells you exactly what to do:
Ask Me. I will guide you.
Guidance is not for perfect people. It’s for people who ask.
3. “You sin by night and by day…”
This part always makes me emotional.
Allah acknowledges something about us: we sin constantly. Quiet sins. Loud sins. Intentional sins. Weak-moment sins.
And He doesn’t say “I forgive some sins.”
He says: I forgive all sins. So seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you.
Not:
• If you’re worthy.
• If you cry enough.
• If you’re already good.
Just ask.
Imagine carrying guilt for years when the door has been open the entire time.
4. “If all of you were righteous… it would not increase My kingdom.”
This removes the pressure of thinking Allah “needs” our worship.
Your salah doesn’t benefit Him.
Your fasting doesn’t increase Him.
Your good deeds don’t grow His power.
They benefit you.
And if everyone disbelieved tomorrow? Allah would still be Al-Malik (The King). Untouched. Complete.
Your obedience is a gift to yourself.
5. “If I gave everyone what they asked for…”
Allah says even if every human and jinn asked Him for everything at once, and He gave it all — it would not decrease His kingdom except like dipping a needle in the ocean.
That is how vast His provision is.
So why do we think our dua is “too much”?
Ask big. Ask boldly. Ask repeatedly.
6. “It is only your deeds that I account for…”
This part is accountability wrapped in mercy.
You are responsible for your choices.
Not your trauma.
Not what people did to you.
Not what you lacked.
But what you choose now.
If you find good in your book of deeds — praise Allah for guiding you.
If you find other than that — don’t blame society, family, or destiny. Turn back and fix it.
🌙 The Core Message of This Hadith
This hadith teaches us three things:
• Allah is perfectly Just.
• Allah is completely Independent.
• Allah is overwhelmingly Merciful.
It humbles you.
It comforts you.
It corrects you.
It invites you back.
And maybe that’s what we need most — an invitation back, not a door slammed shut.
