The Bullets from Manenberg Are a Sign of a Greater Failure

Residents of Manenberg are fed up with witnessing gang violence and hearing gunshots as a new generation grows up.

Another shooting is more than just a crime. It highlights more serious issues like drug abuse, unemployment, poverty, and young people lacking worthwhile opportunities.

Police are necessary, but they won't solve this on their own.

Jobs, education, safe areas, sports, and genuine opportunities for young people are all necessary in Manenberg.

Another political speech is not necessary for the locals.

They require action. They require security. They require a future.

The Cape Flats and MyCiTi

In order to shield the MyCiTi Cape Flats expansion from alleged extortion and intimidation, the City of Cape Town had to secure a High Court interdict.

Indeed, it is essential to safeguard public infrastructure. However, this raises an unsettling political question: why are communities still fighting to ensure that development is carried out in a safe and equitable manner?

Residents want more than ribbon-cutting ceremonies, but politicians enjoy announcing projects. They desire employment, secure neighborhoods, dependable transportation, and genuine economic opportunities.

The project might be protected by a court order, but the underlying issues remain unresolved.

Instead of politicians who only celebrate when a crisis reaches court, the Cape Flats should have political leadership that prevents these crises.

When it comes time for elections, look beyond who makes development promises. Find out who delivers it.
