It’s youth day. I’ve always thought, what can I do to help the youth around me? I’ve tried a few things. I’ve mentored kids. Like truly mentor. I’ve had kids knock on my door asking me to take them out on weekends. With my wife complaining that it’s too close to home. And I took them out. Many, many times. Those same kids are in the gangs today. Breaks my heart just thinking about it. Kassam.

I’ve even put kids that were out of school into private schools. Believe it or not, not even a private school designed for youth at risk helped. I realised that these kids needed more. They needed a full time guy like me. Someone that they can come home to. My dream is to try and solve this problem, insha Allah. I pray you’ll help me do this when I come asking for help.

What I can do now, I’ve realised, is tell true authentic stories. I know I can do that dammit. And I’ve seen how stories can change people, how they inspire them. So that’s what I’m doing next. I’m telling true , authentic stories. Ones that I know will inspire to make a better life, insha Allah. I may need your help for that too. So when I come knocking, be Lekker.

We can’t forget the kids. We simply can’t. They’re all we really have.
