There's a Messerschmitt Bf 109 in South Africa with a story most people have never heard. Serial number 12764. Call sign White 6. Captured by SAAF pilots in the desert and flown home after the war. 🇿🇦

I travelled to Johannesburg to see this aircraft because War Thunder added it to the game and I wanted to know if they got it right.

The M4 Sherman 105mm had a muzzle velocity so slow you could fire the shell, climb out of the tank, and watch it land. 🐌

Sounds useless, right?

But this thing could punch through 100mm of armor with a HEAT round. And it could delete concrete bunkers in three shots.

The South African 6th Armoured Division used these as mobile artillery during the Italian campaign. When a bunker pinned down a company, they'd call in the 105s. Problem solved.

I got to see one of the last surviving examples at Ditsong Museum in Johannesburg. Still has the driver's windshield attachment that most don't have anymore. 🏛️

It's a reminder that not every weapon is built for the highlight reel. Some are built to do the dirty work that wins wars.
