The Dawes Act of 1887 allowed members of Native American tribes to register with the “government” and claim land allotments. “Caucasians” bribed “government officials” with 5$ to falsely register as “Native Americans” so they could claim land and other benefits that were meant for tribes.

As a result, The “Caucasians” who falsely claimed “Native American” heritage through this process came to be known as “Five Dollar Indians.” This process diluted the number of legitimate “Native Americans” recorded in official records and caused confusion about “Native” identities and it’s still a problem to this very day.
