Counter Culture is the cutting-edge Psytrance project of Cape Town-born producer, mix engineer, and mastering artist Dwayne Lucas — formerly known as HOAX. Since its inception in 201
5, Counter Culture has pushed the boundaries of high-energy Full-On Psytrance, seamlessly fusing driving basslines, electrifying drops, and immersive psychedelic FX with melodic and progressive elements. Emerging during a pivotal era in the evolution of South Africa’s Psytrance sound, Counter Culture drew early inspiration from the genre’s pioneers, quickly developing a distinctive sonic identity. The debut album, The X Factor (2015, Mechanik Records), earned critical recognition for its vibrant energy and innovative sound design. This was followed by the 2017 release of [A] Paradox on Nexus Media Records — a 10-track powerhouse that cemented Counter Culture’s reputation within the global Psytrance community. Renowned for a prolific and consistent output, Counter Culture continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. The upcoming release, Fractalism (MMD Records), promises to deliver another immersive, high-impact sonic journey for Psytrance fans around the world.
