SMALL SPACES. This is something very close to my heart. What’s a small space? Well it depends which landscape designer you ask. For me and in terms of the gardens I design typically, it’s less than 100m2. I think I love designing small spaces so much because they’re difficult to get right. They’re unforgiving and every detail needs careful consideration. As designers they make us think- HARD. There’s often a lot that one needs to fit into a small space and they typically need to fulfill a multi- faceted brief. The brief for this garden was long. It needed to provide space to dine, space to sit and relax. It needed a private space for teenagers - where they could get away from adults and hang out. It needed play space for an 8 year old boy, a fire pit, storage, a swing, Braai area, lovely planting, a space to hang washing and keep it hidden from view and privacy from neighboring houses. That’s a lot, but this design delivers on every one of these requirements. I love this garden as it reminds me of my time working in gardens in London. This is probably the closest thing to a London type garden here in Cape Town. A terraced Victorian house with a long, skinny plot. This type of space offers so much in terms of how one deals with the layout. It completely lends itself to a garden of rooms, where one needs to be coaxed into the space by creating division and intrigue- not allowing the viewer to see the whole thing in one go. It has to entice. I can’t wait to build this garden. It is one of my favorites (but then, I think I say that every single time…)
