This Day In Music History: 2010 - Yusuf Islam (Yusuf / Cat Stevens) makes a rare public appearance, performing "Peace Train" at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, which is organized and hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Midway through the song, Colbert interrupts him and introduces Ozzy Osbourne, who starts performing "Crazy Train." Stevens and Osbourne go back and forth, resulting in a strange and hilarious train wreck. 🤣🤣💥🎤🚄
This Day In Music History: 1978 - KISS star in the TV movie Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park... 👻👻👻👻
In the live-action movie, which airs on NBC, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are imbued with superpowers (yes, Simmons can breathe fire). In a very Scooby Doo plot, they must stop an evil scientist at an amusement part. KISS music plays throughout the film, which achieves a new level of cheesy. 🤣🤣
This Day In Music History: 1996 - The first Ozzfest is held as a two-day festival in Phoenix, Arizona, and Devore, California, with Ozzy Osbourne headlining and a metal-packed lineup that includes Slayer, Sepultura and Fear Factory. The festival returns every year until 2008, helping to launch bands like Slipknot, System Of A Down and Disturbed. 💥🎤🥁🎸
This Day In Music History: 1970 - "Lola" peaks at #9 in the US, giving The Kinks their first American Top 10 since "Tired of Waiting for You" in 1965. After their US tour in 1965, they were denied visas for the next three years, killing their momentum in that country. Following their return in 1969, "Lola" gets them back on the airwaves.
Editor's note:
The lyrics was changed from "Coca-Cola" to "cherry cola" because the BBC banned the original version due to its policy against product placement, not due to a lawsuit from the soda company.
The band's singer, Ray Davies, had to interrupt a U.S. tour to fly to London and re-record the lyric to ensure the song would receive airplay on British radio.
This Day In Music History: 2006 - My Chemical Romance release their wildly popular third album, The Black Parade, which was recorded during the band's stay at the notoriously haunted Paramour Mansion in Los Angeles. 👻👻👻👻👻💥
This Day In Music History: 1832 - Conductor and composer Leopold Damrosch is born in Posen, King of Prussia. The violinist would earn a PhD in medicine to appease his parents before turning his focus completely to music. 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎼🎼🎼
This Day In Music History: 1999 - George Martin, who produced most of The Beatles albums, lends his reputation and four decades of music business experience to a start-up Internet company catering to unsigned bands. Martin announces that he will serve as chairman of the advisory board for Garageband.com. 💥🥁🎸🎹🎧
Editor's note: Sadly, the original Garageband.com shut down in July 2010. The site was integrated into the social music discovery site iLike, and users were directed to migrate their content there. The domain name, however, was later acquired by Apple Inc., which now redirects it to the product page for its music software, the GarageBand app. 😡
This Day In Music History: 1977 - In town for a gig with The Police, Sting kills some time by walking through the red light district of Paris. Watching the ladies of the night ply their trade gives him the inspiration for what becomes the band's first hit: "Roxanne."
🇫🇷🎙🗼🎸🎤
Bonus for today: 1962 - "Monster Mash" by Bobby Pickett & the Crypt-Kickers hits #1 on its way to becoming the most famous Halloween song of all time. Pickett's vocals are his impression of Boris Karloff, who was known for his role as Frankenstein's monster...
DJ Squeek will definitely be giving that track a spin on 31st October at the No Friends Of Harry LIVE - Halloween Party! at Woodstock Brewery!!!!!
This Day In Music History: 1974 - Bachman-Turner Overdrive hit #1 in America with the album Not Fragile, the title a play on the album Fragile. Hits from the set include "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and "Roll On Down the Highway." 💥🎸🥁🎤
This Day In Music History: 1991 - Los Angeles declares it "Rocky Horror Picture Show Day" in honor of the 1975 cult classic musical. 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
This Day In Music History: 2001 - Bob Dylan is turned away by security guards at his concert at the Jackson County Exposition Center in Oregon because he doesn't have a credential. The guards were under orders from Dylan's security director not to let anyone through without a pass. "He said no exceptions," explained the venue manager. 🤣💥🎸🎙
Editor's Note... The Bob Dylan biopic, "A Complete Unknown" is well worth a watch!!!!!
This Day In Music History: 1957 - ELVIS PRESLEY's first Christmas album, titled Elvis' Christmas Album, is released. It goes on to become the best-selling holiday album of all time by a wide margin. 🎸🎙💥
At the time of writing this post, Elvis' Christmas Album:
Has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and has RIAA certification for at least 17 million copies shipped in the United States (the highest certification for any Christmas album in the United States.)
Was the first Presley title to achieve Diamond certification from the RIAA.
Still remains the world's best-selling Christmas album and one of the best-selling albums of all time.... Sorry Mariah Carey.... You failed! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This Day In Music History: 1919 - The Radio Corporation of America, soon to be simply known as RCA, is founded by General Electric as a publicly held monopoly, much the same way "the phone company" was originally envisioned. 💥🎙📻
This Day In Music History: 1978 - Sid Vicious of Sex Pistols is arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, who he found dead in the bathroom of their hotel room with a stab wound to her abdomen. Vicious dies of a heroin overdose before he can be tried for the murder. 💥🎤🎸
Bonus one for today!...
1955 - Chrysler introduces the world's first in-car sound systems -- Vinyl record players, complete with an assortment of classical records, mounted under the dashboard!!!!!
This Day In Music History: 1978 - Queen release their "Fat Bottomed Girls"/"Bicycle Race" single, featuring a cover photo that combines imagery from both songs. 💥🎤🥁🎸🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲
This Day In Music History: 1991 - Apple Computers reaches an agreement with The Beatles' Apple Corps, paying $26.5 million for the rights to run music software - an update to their 1981 deal that prohibited the computer maker from selling anything music-related. The deal is revised from time to time as Apple Computer makes music a major part of their business. 💥🍏🎸🎸🎸🥁
This Day In Music History: 2001 - Under pressure to change their name because of letter attacks using anthrax germs, the metal band Anthrax issues a press release explaining they will not. "In light of current events, we are changing the name of the band to something more friendly, 'Basket Full Of Puppies,'" they state. "Actually, just the fact that we are making jokes about our name sucks." 🤣💥🎸🎸🥁
This Day In Music History: 1984 - The extraordinarily popular children's show Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends begins its run on BBC-TV, featuring a narrator by the name of Ringo Starr. 💥🎤🚂🚃
This Day In Music History: 1983 - "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" by Bonnie Tyler stays at #1 in America, with "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" by Air Supply at #2, a configuration that holds for three weeks. Both songs were written and produced by Jim Steinman, making him the first solo writer and producer to hold the top two spots. 💥🎤
Editor's note... Jim Steinman also wrote and produced music for Meat Loaf and Sisters Of Mercy!
P.S. never buy a Bonnie Tyler GPS.... It keeps telling you to "Turn Around" and every now and then it falls apart! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This Day In Music History: 1996 - Pearl Jam fan Mark Zupan crowd surfs all the way to the stage at the band's concert at Fort Lauderdale Stadium... in a wheelchair! He goes on to captain the US wheelchair rugby team and appear in the movie Murderball. 💥🎸🎙
This Day In Music History: 2000 -The TV series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation debuts on CBS with "Who Are You?" by The Who as the theme song. Three more series in the franchise appear, all with theme songs by The Who: CSI: Miami ("Won't Get Fooled Again"), CSI: NY ("Baba O'Riley") and CSI: Cyber ("I Can See For Miles").
This Day In Music History: 1978 - Dolly Parton becomes the first country singer to pose for Playboy. Readers are disappointed when they open the magazine to see the wholesome singer in a Playboy bunny outfit, but with no nudity. Perhaps as a desperate distraction, in some of the shots she's accompanied by a guy in a rabbit suit looking like some kind of deranged Easter bunny. 🤣💥🎸🎤
This Day In Music History: 1963 - A 17-year-old Eric Clapton makes his first appearance with The Yardbirds at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, England. He replaces their original guitarist Anthony "Top" Topham. 💥🎸🎙
This Day In Music History: 2003 - School of Rock opens in theaters, starring Jack Black as a musician who poses as a substitute teacher and forms a band with the students. Classic rock abounds in the film, with teachable moments soundtracked to "Highway to Hell," "Smoke on the Water" and even "Immigrant Song" - a track secured after Black made a video literally begging Led Zeppelin to let them use it.
This Day In Music History: 1977 - After a plot is uncovered to steal it, Elvis Presley's body is moved from its Memphis mausoleum to its final resting place in the Meditation Garden at Graceland.
This Day In Music History 1994 - Megadeth become the first artist to launch an official website, staking a claim on the newly public World Wide Web. The site includes a chat room, photo gallery and song snippets. 🎸🎙📻
