Darius McCollum has been arrested 32 times—not for stealing money or hurting anyone, but for driving buses and trains without permission. He doesn’t do it to cause harm. He does it because he loves public transit and knows how to operate it perfectly.
Darius has Asperger’s syndrome and a deep obsession with New York City’s MTA system. He memorized the entire subway map and started impersonating transit workers at just 15 years old. He wears the uniform, signs out keys, and drives the routes.
But here’s the twist—he’s actually very good at it. He makes every stop on time, announces each station clearly, and has even fixed broken signals.
Once, he drove a bus full of people to JFK Airport because the real driver didn’t show up, and he didn’t want anyone to miss their flight.
Despite his skills, the MTA won’t hire him because of his criminal record—one that only exists because of his love for trains and buses. As a result, he has spent much of his life behind bars.
It’s a sad irony: the one person who might care the most about making transit work smoothly is the one they won’t let help.
