At the Murstad family home in Kampen, there is no such thing as my room or your room. Stylist and art director Linda and Mikal Murstad have created their own template for how they want to live together with their children, with the goal of as much closeness and flexibility as possible.

The apartment is modest in size, but it feels larger because the rooms flow naturally into one another. Instead of creating many closed spaces, Linda and Mikal have focused on openness and flexibility.

For them, the home is first and foremost a place to live together as a family. The goal has been to create spaces that invite closeness rather than separation. Instead of dividing the apartment into clearly defined zones, they have chosen solutions that allow the rooms to change function depending on the moment.

Materials have played an important role in shaping the atmosphere of the home. Natural surfaces such as untreated pine, oak and stone create warmth and tactility, while steel and cast iron add contrast. Linen and bouclé fabrics soften the space and bring a sense of calm.

Many of the objects in the apartment have been carefully chosen over time. Rather than buying everything at once, the couple has preferred to find pieces gradually — often directly from the people who design or make them. Knowing the story behind an object gives it a different value and meaning.

The home is also designed with children in mind. Instead of filling rooms with fixed functions, the spaces are open enough to adapt to everyday life — whether it’s playing on the floor, drawing at the table or gathering together in the evening.

For Linda and Mikal, the home is not about perfection or strict design rules. It is about creating an environment that feels warm, personal and lived in — a place where both adults and children can move freely and feel at ease.

What I love most about being a creative director is building the right room. Bringing together photographers, stylists, set designers, models. Finding people who understand the vision but aren’t afraid to challenge it.

My best work rarely comes from control alone. It comes from trust. When everyone is confident enough in their own craft to add something unexpected, the idea becomes bigger than what I first imagined.
