Why “just eat less and move more” doesn’t always work
I recently had some blood work done and it explained a LOT about why weight loss has been harder than it should be.
Here’s the simple version.
My body isn’t broken — it’s just been working against me in a few key areas, and once you understand that, things start to make a lot more sense.
• Insulin resistance
This means my body struggles to process carbs properly. Even when I eat “normally”, insulin stays high, which makes fat loss difficult and fat storage easy. It’s not about eating more, it’s about how my body handles fuel.
• Low testosterone
Testosterone isn’t just about muscle. It affects energy, motivation, mood, and how your body uses fat. Low levels often mean feeling flat, tired, and holding onto stubborn belly fat no matter how hard you try.
• Low DHEA
DHEA is a hormone made by your adrenal glands (your stress system). It plays a big role in energy, mood, stress tolerance, and fat metabolism. Mine was very low, which explains the constant fatigue and why I’ve been short-tempered and quick to snap. I’m really looking forward to not feeling like that anymore.
• Cholesterol imbalance
High triglycerides and poor cholesterol balance are another sign that my body hasn’t been handling carbs and fats efficiently.
The important part?
None of this is about willpower.
So the plan, based on my doctor’s recommendations, is to fix the root causes instead of fighting symptoms: reducing refined carbs, focusing on high-fibre carbs, longer overnight fasting, regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity, insulin support, and correcting hormone imbalances so my body can actually work with me again.
When that happens, weight loss becomes a side effect of better health — not a punishment.
Cost breakdown (for those asking):
• One 60mg pen costs R5,500
• Dose is 5mg per week
• One pen lasts about 12 weeks (±3 months)
→ Works out to roughly R1,830 per month
