Last night we sat amongst the reeds on one of our local rivers, amongst the frogs and the weavers as we watched hundreds and thousands of swallows come home to roost.

Just another amazing experience on our doorstep.

Why “just eat less and move more” doesn’t always work

I recently had some blood work done and it explained a LOT about why weight loss has been harder than it should be.

Here’s the simple version.

My body isn’t broken — it’s just been working against me in a few key areas, and once you understand that, things start to make a lot more sense.

• Insulin resistance
This means my body struggles to process carbs properly. Even when I eat “normally”, insulin stays high, which makes fat loss difficult and fat storage easy. It’s not about eating more, it’s about how my body handles fuel.

• Low testosterone
Testosterone isn’t just about muscle. It affects energy, motivation, mood, and how your body uses fat. Low levels often mean feeling flat, tired, and holding onto stubborn belly fat no matter how hard you try.

• Low DHEA
DHEA is a hormone made by your adrenal glands (your stress system). It plays a big role in energy, mood, stress tolerance, and fat metabolism. Mine was very low, which explains the constant fatigue and why I’ve been short-tempered and quick to snap. I’m really looking forward to not feeling like that anymore.

• Cholesterol imbalance
High triglycerides and poor cholesterol balance are another sign that my body hasn’t been handling carbs and fats efficiently.

The important part?
None of this is about willpower.

So the plan, based on my doctor’s recommendations, is to fix the root causes instead of fighting symptoms: reducing refined carbs, focusing on high-fibre carbs, longer overnight fasting, regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity, insulin support, and correcting hormone imbalances so my body can actually work with me again.

When that happens, weight loss becomes a side effect of better health — not a punishment.

Cost breakdown (for those asking):
• One 60mg pen costs R5,500
• Dose is 5mg per week
• One pen lasts about 12 weeks (±3 months)
→ Works out to roughly R1,830 per month

GLp-1 you say

Or are you not saying anything at all, too scared of what people might think.

Some people may think it's lazy or taking the easy way out but like they say you don't have to. Wear running shoes to Run a marathon, but it flipping helps.

So you do you boo and screw what anybody else thinks surely being thin is better than being fat no matter how you get there.

It's not cheap being thin however you chose to. Do it, diet, gym or glp-1's but don't take shortcuts consult your doctor do it properly, use the right pens and give yourself the best chance.

Do you know what this is? And have you got the Mrs Balls to give this Chutney a go?

AMATUNGULU (NUM-NUM): THE UNDERRATED LOCAL GEM

If you’ve ever spotted those glossy red fruits on a coastal shrub, chances are you’ve found Amatungulu, also known as Natal Plum or Num-Num. Sweet, tangy, and packed with flavour, this little fruit is one of South Africa’s best-kept secrets.

Is It Edible?
Yes. Only the ripe, deep red fruit is edible.
The flavour is a mix of cranberry, strawberry, and citrus.
Avoid the leaves and sap, as they are toxic.

How to Make Amatungulu Chutney
This chutney works brilliantly with braai food.

Ingredients:
2 cups ripe Amatungulu (chopped)
1 onion (finely chopped)
1–2 garlic cloves (minced)
1 thumb ginger (grated)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup vinegar (white or apple cider)
1/2–1 teaspoon chilli flakes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
(optional) 1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/4 cup water

Method:

Sauté the onion, garlic and ginger until soft.

Add the chopped Amatungulu.

Add the sugar, vinegar, spices and chilli.

Simmer for 25–35 minutes until thick and glossy.

Bottle and refrigerate. Keeps for around 2–3 weeks.

What It Pairs With
This chutney goes well with:
Lamb chops
Pork belly
Chicken on the braai
Boerewors rolls
Cheese boards
Grilled fish
Biltong platters

Try it next time you pick a bowl of ripe Num-Nums. It is one of South Africa’s most underrated flavours.

In your estimation what is the most important tip you can give somebody getting into overlanding and off road driving?

Ours is Tyre pressure. Inflating and deflating can be a major ball ache but having the right Tyre pressure for your terrain is super underrated.
