The dialogue of prayer, hinges on the discussion of discipline. However, the issue is not a lack of discipline per se, the issue is misplaced discipline. Simply put, it's not that we have no discipline, it is that we have wrongly placed discipline. There are exercises in our life, that we are consistent in applying ourselves to, exercises that may not necessarily be effective but our consistency in applying ourselves therein is a function of a degree of implementing discipline. As such, our discipline can be misplaced. There are bodily exercises and then there are spiritual exercises. Consistent application of ourselves in both requires discipline. But it is Paul that warned us that Bodily exercise profitteth very little, He would rather have us apply our discipline in exercises of Godliness such as prayer.
A successful prayer adventure therefore is not just a function of grace and Spirit empowerment alone, it is also a function of consistent right applying of discipline.
What then is discipline? It is certainly not something psychology can educate us on, but it is clear that it is an entity built in our spirit man that was meant to ensure that we are consistent in applying ourselves to Spiritual exercises. Looking at the life of Adam, his consistence in keeping the garden, naming the animals and meeting with God daily on the cool of the day shows us that discipline that predates the fall, it is a reality built in our spirit man. The Spirit man knows how to be consistent in Spiritual exercises such as prayer. Therefore if all men have a spirit, then all men have discipline. The issue therefore is not a lack of discipline but misplaced discipline and such a possibility can about as a result of the fall. The possibility of men giving their discipline to wrong exercises came after the fall. Therefore for men to give themselves yet again to prayer, men must learn the need of applying discipline to prayer.
One great way of learning how to rightly apply our discipline comes from participating in corporate prayer gatherings. This entire treatise of mine was to get us here, a place where I can admonish the saints to attend prayer gatherings to rediscover spiritual discipline.
