🐬 Stranded Dolphin at Morgan Bay

Very sadly, a 2.51 m female Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin stranded at Morgan Bay. This is one of the larger recorded sizes for a female of this species, males typically grow up to 2.6 m.

πŸ¦‘ A varied diet of fish, squid, and octopus was confirmed by food remains found in the gastro-intestinal tract. The species is currently listed as β€˜Near Threatened’ by the IUCN, due to pollution, habitat degradation, and bycatch.

While the cause appears to be natural mortality due to old age, the event provided a valuable opportunity for capacity-building. Rangers from the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency were mentored on how to properly measure and sample stranded cetaceans of this size.

Pictured (L–R): Luvuyo Mgobo, Kevin Cole, James Mbodamo, Lorna Ngxuthu, and Sibonelo Mthembu. Special thanks to Dr Deborah Robertson-Andersson (Kei Mouth) for her assistance, and to Richard Warren-Smith from the Morgan Bay Hotel for reporting the stranding.
