Sthembiso Mdlalose, a self-confessed Usindiso Building arsonist, will return to the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court this morning to continue his trial.
Mdlalose is charged with murder, attempted murder, arson, and obstructing justice. He has, however, entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
In court yesterday, the prosecution presented its first witness, Lieutenant Colonel Andile Mankanyi, a key figure in the investigation who was a captain at the time the case commenced.
Mankanyi told the court that the accused gave a straight confession to him during the investigation and appeared totally conscious and sober during the process.
However, during cross-examination, defence lawyer Advocate Leonard Cindi questioned Mankanyi's testimony, arguing that his findings were based only on personal observation rather than medical records or expert analysis.
The defence highlighted the lack of medical evidence, attempting to undermine the credibility of the testimony.
